Picture search ( Photos & galleries on Mayhem )
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:30:01 am »

Hi,

With Martin having just posted another 460 pic of models, I began to wonder - there must be thousands of pics available in Martins files and on the forum, so, would there be any way of creating a picture search facility?

This could allow anyone to quickly find pics of a particular type of boat they were interested in.

It would require posters to add details of each pic to a data base, but thats no real great effort if, say, there was an added info box alongside each picture file.

Just a thought

Ian

Wonder if Martin realizes just how many of the photographs of The Southern Airshow 2007 he has put on more than once.   :-\

The great John Bass sent me a DVD, three DVDs in fact.
The southern Air show contained over 467 photos... here's the process:

Copy 3.5 Gigabyte of photos to  the hard drive,
Duplicate them again to a working directory,
Check and rotate all photos are right way up,
Fetched out a few obvious duplicates,
Sort photos into obvious groups where possible,
Resize photos from 7+Meg each down to about 200K each,
Create new icons for gallery indexing,
Run Album generator,
Test and correct errors,
Test on-line,
Adjust, test and correct errors,
Test and correct errors again,
Copy to FTP PC and upload to Mayhem server,
Test on-line,
Adjust, test and correct errors,
Test and correct errors again,
Creating and re-index, index, show, news, main and menu frames and pages,
Test via network, broadband & Dial-up.
Make pages live.....
Total time = 4 1/2 hours.  :D

.... and there still errors after all that....  :embarrassed:
And that's an easy gallery as John Bass has done all the work really!
To add discriptions to each photo ( checking all referances ) would take about 5 - 20 minutes per photo....  :-\

Thanks for spotting the dups Dicky, gallery recreated.

I'm always looking for quicker way of managing the photos and different gallery applications but after trying another 12 this week, I always come back to Paint shop pro 7, Compupic 6 & Arles 7 - fastest, quickest & and most configurable, respectively.

I had high hopes for the other gallery software I tried on the Ally Pally photos ( Sidescroll & Autoviewer ) -   Photos here   but it handles 10 photos in the same way it handles 100 so the more you add, the slower it gets....  :-\

Is it me or do others find that when viewing the show photos kindly put up by Martin, that the option shown as "Slide Show" is not, in fact an option? The photos appear (each for a brief time) as a slide show, without my doing anything but clicking on a thumbnail?

I started on it and it started the slide show without me doing anything. However if you click on the "slideshow" button you can stop it and just use the "next" and "previous" buttons.   O0

I forgot to add, that with over 400 photos to look at I think the slide show is a great improvement and will prevent a lot of repetitive strain injury. plus you can stop and start it where you like. Well done Martin. O0

I like the new slideshow format, well done Martin. Also thanks t John Bass for yet two more great batches of photographs. I am hoping that John will be at Alfold again this year to provide those of you that are unable to make the show with a pictorial extravaganza.
