Hase houle on an pilot cutter
« on: February 23, 2008, 05:46:15 pm »

Hello everybody,

I am finishing the deck of my cutter.
However, I don't have any indication or drawing on the hase swell and the chain pipe. I don't know if the ship was equiped with one or two anchors.  :embarrassed:
Nobody would it have a photograph or a drawing of tne foredeck of a cutter from the years 1890-1900?

Thank you!

Hi VW

I do not have your answers, but some more information may help others.

At the risk of sounding pedantic. Is this an English Pilot Cutter, French, etc.?

Also, do you have a name or port for her?

What are her displacement/dimensions, this may help somebody else hazard a guess as to anchors. Or even to the original boat it may have bee modelled on.

Hi VW,
I hope (?) I have attached a couple of pics of the Bristol channel pilot cutter 'Mascotte', which hopefully show you an idea of one type of arrangement.

Regards

Here are some shots of a plan of a 25m (approx) French cutter. Date of origin of boat unknown.

Looking at the Photos of the 'Mascotte', there is only one chain pipe.
This suggests only one anchor.

The plans of the French cutter, show two chain pipes. Marked on the plan as '7' in pictures #006 and #007. This suggest possbily two anchors.

Hope this helps

Also the chain drum is plainly offset to port in the initial picture which supports the single anchor hypothesis.

Here's another pic of mascotte from the broker's website (she is/was up for sale - anyone got £350,000!) which shows the anchor as well

Also a quote from the spec

GENERAL EQUIPMENT
3 Fishermans anchors (2 bow anchors 36 kg / 36 kg / 1 kedge anchor 29 kg)

so she clearly carries 2 bow anchors.  One and a spare?

Nice!

It's for the french cutter H21, beter knowd as the "Fellow". Build by Julienne.

I will put two anchors on the for deck, on the Port side. One and a spare.
