Grand Banks schooner 'Maine Chance'
« on: February 08, 2008, 12:43:21 pm »

I attach fotos of my latest model for the benefit of readers who enjoy looking at other models.

'Maine Chance' iis entirey scratch-built and is my idea of  a yacht conversion based on lines taken from  'Elsie', probably the most famous of the American late 19th Century Grand Banks schooners.

The model's specs are:
Scale 1:32, length 40.5" (plus 12" bowsprit), Height (keel - Main topmast Bob) 52", Beam 12",
Weight 7lbs (plus 5lbs detachable keel)
Sail control via two drum winches :- (1) - mainsail, (2) Foresail, staysail, jumbo, and balloon jibs.
Auxilliary electric motor power for emergency use only - to get out of trouble if being blown towards a Lee shore (why are there always willow trees and/or reeds in which to become entangled???)

Standing/running rigging have been slightly modified to facilitate setting up at the waterside, whilst topmasts and bowsprit are retactable to enable the model to be carried in the car ready-rigged O0

Additional 'action' and/or static (including deck detail) shots can be posted if requested.

Gorgeous schooner mate.. I'm interested in seeing pictures of the sheet routing for the jibs and foresail.. I'm doing a similar rig, and am kinda stumped when it comes to just how to haul in these sails without buggering up the overlapper..

The book 'An introduction to Radio Controlled Scale Sailing Models' by Phillip Vaughan Williams covers this issue and a whle lot more.

And it is well worth the money. It was 13 pounds 2 years ago.

Popeye,

I really enjoyed the two photos with the lee rail almost to the water, when I had my full size sail boat that was the time that I enjoyed her the most. The rigging was singing, the water rushing past the boat, she just felt the most alive at that time. As others have said and I agree, a real beautiful model you have there ! !   O0 :o :-)) More photos of the inside would definitely be much appreciated. Maybe if you have enough photos of the build a builders log maybe.

This is a friends too modest to post.
A very impressive model not bad for a first effort!

Hi all, can I recommend an old b&w film called Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracey.  There are so many working Grand Banks schooners in it that the film has a historical significance.  It is a good story too!
Don't bother with the Disney remake.
