A good few years back Model Boats magazine ran a series of articles on the build of this beautiful little vessel. Someone out there must still have a copy for you.

Yes Nov 1991- Jul 92
Guess what I have MB going back to 1970 but those 2 years have disappeared in one one of my shifts.
Thats why I'm searching. Notice the MMI has the boat featured in the Jan 08 issue but It hasn't arrived down here yet

No drawings with the MMI article, which details a build of 2 large scale models.

I have the original plan from Oct 91 plus the articles to Feb 92. Can't find the remaining articles for some reason.

This plan could be copied if you wish.

A fellow in Burnaby made up a hull in a larger size - 40 inches long, 10 inch beam - there are 3 -4 over here along with the incomplete one I have on the go.

Send me an e-mail or through here. Regards, Mike

I built "Bluebird" at 1:12 scale. There is a picture of it somewhere on this site. I have also a complete record of its build on disc. I am more than willing to send you a copy. I could also do a copy of the lines etc. but they would be a bit of a jigsaw to put together.
I have done this for other members of the forum and they didn't appear to have problems with it.
If you want any more details then my address is under the profiles button. Bryan Young.

Thanks Bryan
At 1:12 the model should work out at 52" by 11" beam, just a nice size to fit on my workbench. Must be getting old because I looked up an excel scale conversion worksheet I have only to realize that there are 12" to the foot so conversion is easy O0
By using the lines in  a CAD program  I will be able to loft out the frames.

Got your PM Jock and will reply in more detail later. But on this general forum I would ask other questions:
1. On the original plan there are alternative methods of producing the hull. The originator (Metcalf?) was insistent about keeping the weight down, and rightly so. The plan as produced by MBoats was for a model at 0.5":ft (1:24). Too small for my liking. My 1:12 model had to weigh (and does) under 20lb all up....batteries, motors and everything else. The very good reason for this is that the boat has no draught. Normally I build large and heavy models, so this was a challenge. I made my own 'glass hull (mould still available) and went from there. A very difficult but rewarding model to build. I think the worst part was the making of the stanchions, took forever. How much would it cost to send you the mould? Or how much would you pay for the hull? (I am joking...a little). Proper PM will follow. BY.

I should think plans are available from www.xlistplans.demon.co.uk.
They have most of the older model boats plans. I  bought  a set from them a year or two back which went back to the Model Maker days.
The owner of Bluebird off Chelsea wrote a good book  including many colloured photos  in 1990. It was published by Collectors'Books Limited.
It would be worth while to track down a copy. Its full title was - "Bluebird a dream of a boat in six Acts"

I still have not forgotten you. As I do not need the plans any more I propose sending you the original together with all the relevant stuff on a CD. I also want to get rid of the mould. I do not know how much it would cost to get it to you, but if you look at the pics of the model elsewhere on this forum you will see that it is OK. All I would ask is that you do not, ever, use the mould for commercial purposes. I would prefer to chop it up rather than that. BY.

Thanks Bryan
I'll look at the CD and decide.
Could you let me know how much the mould weighs so I can work out the best way of getting it down here.

Sorry for the long delay. If the model is built at 1:12 then the entire model including batteries and motors etc. has to weigh under 20lb. Mine comes in at 18.5 lb. although it is 51"x11". The mould is probably in the region of 25lb.
The reason the boat has to be light is due to the fact there is no draught to speak of. The "skeg" contributes nothing to the buoyancy so the effective draught aft is only about 1.5", and although the forward draught may be 3" or so, the hull form is such that little buoyancy is created. If you would still like a CD of my build and a full set of plans (although segmented) please PM me via the "profiles" button. I was going to offer to use my mould to make you a hull, but present cicumstances make that a no-no. BY.
