Mamod Engines and Steam Boiler Tests
« on: February 12, 2008, 01:36:51 pm »

I have inherited a couple of Mamod Marine Steam Engines and wanting to build a boat to fit them into. There is a local Boat club that do boiler tests just wanted to plug into members knowledge here.

So....
1. Is it worth my time getting a certificate?
2. Whats does the the test involve?
3. Will these engines pass?

I mainly run my models on my own but maybe get more involved in a club if these engines turn out any good.

Thanks Richard

I believe that the Mamod engines run at a low pressure and do not require a certificate. My wife works in a school science lab, they have Mamod engines and they have to be visually inspected but are not pressure tested.

You will obviously have to ask at the local club if you want to run on their water, because of insurance etc, but I should have thought that if you stick to the Mamod safety valve (unmodified) it shouldn't need testing. I had a Mamod boiler and engine in a Veron Titan tug many years ago. I wish Mamod would make an oscillating V-twin with those raiway locomotive cylinders of theirs.

I think the new 3bar/litre rule will obviate the need for all the testing.
Most insurance companies now accept it, but I don't know if the MPBA have decided to accept it yet.
You might have to check with your proposed club as to whether they are under MPBA control.

You might also like to try here, there a specialists who do the sort of things you are contemplating.
