Motive Power for 10 foot Heavy Cruiser
« on: July 05, 2006, 09:39:46 pm »

OK, I know motors and power is usually my thing.
BUT
I got the above model with 3 scale props, but the Shafts are very close to the hull.
I need some meaty motors running the shafts up to 5000 revs.
Where is the best place to get a geared drive ir toothed drive, and any ideas about car heater motors.
Just chucking any ideas about.
Thanks

Try using 12v windscreen wiper motors with the gearboxes removed.

It's what I used in the big Mersey and they swing 4" diameter props with out having to be geared  ;)

Hi Bob

How big are the props?

Fan motors are ok just remember the bigger the car the bigger the motor and as Mike said windscreen wiper motors. The only thing you may find is that they only have a free running speed of 4500 rpm so to get your 5000rpm you would need to up the voltage. Most will quite happily run on 18V no Problem.

The main problem is that I only have about 3/4 inch between shaft and hull, so need a belt/chain/gear drive to allow the motors to be mounted off centre.
Thanks for everything so far.

Hi Bob

The company I used for the gears in the Outboards on my Atlantic was hpcgears www.hpcgears.com they do all sorts of gears pulley belts and chains drive. The main thing you will need to find out is how much power loss each will create. If your using a fan motors you need to be careful as some of theses are over 3" diameter and you might have a problem getting gears in to put the motor high enough.

My TID is running 3-1 chain drive with a kids leccy scooter motor on 24v, very scale speed.
The gearing part was sort of 'cobbled together' using various inner/outer diameters to match up the required gears, but it works fine, theirs close up pics of the arrangement on my website @ www.BadBillsBoatyard.co.uk

Hope they help a bit.

I've built a 9 ft model of RMS Olympic. Her shafts are very near the bottom too. I installed 3 buhler motors, and toothed pulleys and timming belts from Maplins. Works very well to date; had about twenty outings so far. Hope this helps PIT.

Try Technobots  - http://www.technobots.co.uk - for gears, belts etc. Not used them yet, but intend to soon.

Pit,
Where did you get the Buhlers from?
Will be getting into this set up very soon now.
Will have a look at the maplins catalogue too.
Thanks so far to all who answered.

I'm restoring a US heavy crusier around 6ft long which uses two Graupner 600 geared motors, the gear shaft on mine are offset from the centre.

you can get buhler motors for £10 from proops educational stand at many of the shows,  HPC gears as discussed earlier are fantastic, we use them here at work and we have never had any negative experience with them... their service and toothed belts are second to none.....

MFA (www.modelflightaccessories.com) supplied me with aluminium toothed pulleys and drive belts at reasonable prices but these seem to have dropped off their website. Still, worth a call? They also supply ready built motors and toothed-drive units but at prices for the deep of pockets. Muffet gears may also be worth a look. (www.muffettgears.co.uk)

Thanks all,
Have nearly finished the outside of the hull, just all those portholes to paint, then will be turning her the right way up, varnishing the decks and fitting her motors.
