Great job, the planking looks super. Is this to be a sailing model or a display only?

This is to be a display model only, but with working features such as slow rotation prop, lights etc

Nice work. What timber are you using? And what glue do you favour?

The outer planking is lime (was mahogany on the real boat) and I use ordinary exterior pva, I buy it by the gallon (5Lts) from the builders merchants as it's cheaper.

Some lovely construction work there, a real delight to the eye!

Thanks Colin.

If I'd known it was that easy to plank like that I'd have tried it myself. Yeah right.

Beautiful work Mike, shame to paint it.  O0

Hi there Mike

It is lovely to watch a professional build - I am one of those who is not too keen on 'modern' vessels tugs and modern lifeboats have never 'been my thing' but this age of lifeboat and especially the way you have built it with half frames, and assimilated calico between the planks - has the old grey matter thinking.     One of the lifeboats (if I was to pick one that I like) or which one I would build either The Liverpool type lifeboat drawn up by Vic Smeed; or the Barnett Stromness type lifeboat drawn up by Vic Smeed again.....

mmmmm food for thought for the next build eh.

KEEP UP YOUR BRILLIANT WORK.

One question, did you coat the cotton with diluted PVA glue?   Also, had you thought of using tissue instead of cotton? because, I am considering using this technique on my build but fear that the cotton would be too thick?

Yes it only took four weeks to do both layers of planking  :o ;)

You can still see the ghosts of the diagonals even after painting as you will see when I post more pictures!

Thanks for the compliment John but I am just an amateur builder who enjoys a challenge. I very rarely keep boats I build for long as I enjoy the building and am not really interested in sailing very much, once I know it does what it is supposed to do then I loose interest in it. The exception to this rule will be the Monster Mersey! ;)

Yes the cotton cloth is glued in place by coating with diluted pva. re the thickness, in 1/12th scale this thin cotton sheet is ideal, but if you need to go thinner take a look in your local fabric shop, they have cottons in all thicknesses from see-through to denim weight.

Hi ya there Mike,

Looking really smart; one question Sir, when you built the deck shelter - did you leave the Florist's foam in place, or have you removed that now; just leaving the veneer?

hi ya Mike, thanks for the info - looking forward to seeing your pics.

One other question, why did you put a paper mache' layer over the top of the florist's foam?  Was it some form of barrier to stop the veneers sticking to the foam?  or, are there other reasons....sorry for the nitty gritty questions, but, watching builds like your build; and, also watching people building kits on this forum - it's one of the best ways I have found - of increasing your own building skills  O0  My motto is - it doesnt matter if its scratch or kit built - one can always learn from it - and sometimes the way one does something is inspiration  :)

Two reasons for the papier mache layer;

1) Stops the veneer sticking to the foam, easier to remove foam without damaging planking.

2) Gives a nice smooth, easily sealed surface on the inside which takes less fiddly sanding down to take the grey paint.  ;)

I said that it was a GAFF rig but in fact it's a LUG rig !   Sorry for any confusion. :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

You'll have to watch that the motors don't affect the compass ;D ;D ;D
