Hi All

I have just been in contact with a government department and could only understand half the conversation. The reason being that these departments speak in Jargon. In their environment they must have a completely different language of jargon. When they deal with the public, who obviously don't speak Jargon, they look at you as if you are some sort of retarded fool. Why don't they just speak English like the rest of us. Oh and another thing that is over used here in Australian Government Dept's is acronyms, every where you go there is an acronym. >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(

I Feel better now

Get used to it David, acronyms are here to stay. We are in Sydney at the moment, staying with our son, and our grandsons brought home their primary school newsletter. It had one full A4 page of acronyms normally used in school communications, and their translations, so parents could understand what was being written  ???

... not very much different in Germany either.
Whenever you read a letter from either Tax- or another office you wonder what the `eck they want from you. I wonder if they had visited the same school-system and had learned the same language.... must be from Mars!

Ever noticed that if you write down the word "jargon" quite how much like "arrogant" it looks? Maybe the two go hand-in-hand..... ::)

Yes, but those are "In house". You would not go to someone outside of the Model boat fraternity and quote all those and expect them to understand what your on about. These departments who speak these jargon are a kin to a secret society, they probably have a secret handshake as well.

You can always invoke the "AFI" procedure.  As explained to me, it means "I cant really be bothered just now"

PS From a meeting with a computer techie, many years ago:
Me - "What's TLA?"
Him - "Three Letter Acronym"
Me - "I know it is, but what's it mean?"
Him - "Three Letter Acro...... are you winding me up?"

A TLA is only a Three Letter Acronym (TLA) if it makes a three letter word; otherwise it is a Three Letter Abbreviation (TLA)

So for example RAM is a TLA, while ROM is a TLA.

Then of course there is the ETLA (Extended Three Letter Acronym/Abbreviation - AKA the FLA) or the EETLA (Extended, Expanded Three LEtter Abbreviation/Acronym AKA the FLA - though this is a different FLA to the ETLA)

Jargon, though, is more than just abbreviations and acronyms. The problem for me is when it is used out of context. It does allow complex concepts to be expressed in simple terms making communications between those in the know simpler. Problem is when it is used to show the individual's brilliance or ot make others seem small or excluded.

I worked for a company with a regular flow of new Projects. The first task  of every new Project Team was to decide on the Project Acronym; the next was to decide just what they were going to do...

FART Farmers Against Ridiculous Taxes (New Zealand) Now this I can say is true because part of NZ governments fight against green house gasses is a yearly tax on farm animals for their Fart emissions of methane $1 for each cow and .50c for each sheep. O0 O0

I have a new line manager where I work, if I am in a meeting with him I only ever understand about 25% of what he says the rest is all jargon and one line manager sound bites. He can talk and not make any sense, I think it the way things have gone everywhere.

Ching- we call it ""xxxxx" Bingo".

In my company we have some pre-printed Bingo-cards. They are all filled up with the typical words the popous a**es use to use in a meeting. Such like: Cashflow, outsourcing, Production Maintenance, Storeline, Just in time... where we often ask: Are we a f*%&§ß ing German company, or what?
Anyway- whenever a boss or one of our manager uses one of the typical words, we cross it on our cards. The first who has 5 diagonal, vertical or horizontal knocks with the finger slightly on the table. So all others know he got it. Du the break we pay him a coffe. One time one of our collegues was so much involved in it, he mentioned loudly: "Bulls**t", and all the rest turned and stared at him. Now we knock on the table....

In Portsmouth, Highbury Technical College had some pretensions of becoming higher profile and encompassing a larger catchment area.
The Original name considered was  South Hants Institute of Technology.
Cant understand why the name was quickly dropped and the original name retained!!!

I think I will print some cards for myself and the other engineers, that sounds like fun. This guy is only 26 and has not been in any production environment as a manager, so he has no idea how to talk to people. As soon as he starts talking I switch off.
