which glue / adhesive
« on: February 27, 2008, 02:45:30 pm »

I am allmost at the point where I have to glue in the wheelhouse windows (Boston Fury trawler) and have read somewhere that superglue makes them go opaque.   Wheelhouse constructed in ply and curves so the windows will have to be done individually.

Try on a piece of scrap first......thick superglue shouldn't make the window go cloudy..............it is the fumes from the runny stuff that does the damage

I'd still be inclined to avoid superglue though, but Bob's right try it first but leave it a day or so to see if there is an effect. You might do better using double sided fixing tape (do a search on here) as you could apply that to the window first and then press it into place. For belt and braces you could then run a peice of stripwood above/below the window aperture once the windows are in to ensure they stay in place - use epoxy or similar to stick it in.

Use the aircraft modellers canopy glue called Formula 560. It is a modified pva that has a 'quick grab' and dries crystal clear so any you get on the glazing doesn't show!  ;)

I use it on all my models these days as I used to get clouding even with thick pva.

2-K epoxy mould would do the job as well or, if the curves are not too big I had some good results with a thick, clear varnish.

Hope that was out of any help or gets any idea started....

Thanks for the advice chaps, its still quite a way off but I will be experimenting before I attempt the permanent fixing.

Hi

 :-\

New member hear so I hope I do this right

I used various types for glazing but I found canopy glue good.

I now use Weldbond, same type of modified PVA but works even better than canopy glue

Regards to all

I enjoy the banter on the site.
