Gimee back me stars!
« on: March 11, 2008, 04:27:49 am »

Martin, I just received your PM. Forget that malarky for now, for there are things of graver importance.
I just checked-in from me death bed and suddenly all the stars are gone. One minute I've got four stars, the next I'm just another 'Full Mayhemer'.
I don't wanna be a full member already - I want me stars back! I've worked hard to post all that gibberish these past couple years and it's taken the best part of since the day Mayhem was born to earn all them stars I earnt. I want 'em back -- else you ain't getting this super-slinky RC gadget that I've been working on for the past umpteen months sent to your works address.
Oh yeah, and I made an exact same super-slinky RC gadget for Bluebird, too. So if you don't return the stars, then I'll hold Bluebird's gadget to ransom until otherwise. And you know what HE's like when the dummy needs spitting out, right?
So if you got your ears on, Bluebird..... work your stuff. Start a bleedin' mutiny, demand the return of our stars.
Or the gadgets gets it.

PMK, I`d second that!
What have I written for rubbish, bored with jokeswhich have been mostly deleted, made stupid advices....and then! A miracle!
An English fleet has made a bl***y suebian her Admiral!

And now?

Gone with the wind....

Martin, I beg in good I threat in bad: beg steal or borrow..... but make the stars shine again....

Sorry chaps NO DEAL - I can honestly see the good reason behind the moderators and Martin deleting the STAR SYSTEM - as it says on the top of the page as it does level the playing field 'We are all equal, always have been and always will be' Your input into this forum, and White Ensign's and mine are all equal.

So, Martin and rest of the moderators FOR ME you can take the posting counts off as well, for the simple reason = it doesnt matter how many postings you put on, its the quality of postings that count - and also the helpful information in the posting.

Bluebird is quite right. There was some evidence to suggest that the prognostications of some of those with an exalted rank were perceived as carrying more weight than they actually deserved and this was putting off some people from posting. As Bluebird says, it's the quality of the posts that matters, not the volume and good posts can come from anyone on the Forum.

I don't particularly mind the total posts being shown though, most Forums have this and people can make up their own minds as to what they are worth. The important thing is not to equate number of posts with "rank". It was fun when the Forum was a lot smaller but has become rather meaningless now.

However I did suggest, tongue in cheek, that we could have the following:

Shipmate
Full Mayhemmer
Old Lag
Pain in the Ar5se

Fortunately perhaps, it wasn't taken up... ;)

I still think that stars and number of posts should stay as new members tend to take a little more notice (I know I do)of those who have been on the forum a little longer than those who have only been here a short time they also know the ways of the forum. :D

Morning, Mr. Bish'.
Yeah, I know, I know. But the new members will now be getting an easy ride to the five-star suite, won't they? They only have to hit the send button ten times now, but the rest of us poor saps had to earn our stripes the HARD way.
And besides, I only had four stars but was looking forward to winning another. I wanted five stars... six stars... loads of stars, like some of you lot. And now you done gone and kilt' all the fun and ruined all me chances.
S'not fair! (sob!).

I think we were in a very real danger of encouraging members to post for the sake of earning stars rather than saying something constructive and helpful and consequently the quality of some of the threads was sufferring.

Wouldn't it be better to get our thoughts away from who has how many posts or stars and think more about what we contribute to the community for the benefit of everyone else rather than our own enhancement?

I think it would be very interesting to see how the picture would change if we were to count words rather than postings and see how some of the posts in an in depth build thread stacks up against a hundred or so, one liners!

I agree with the new system.

There are old hands at modelling with a great deal of experience and specialis knowledge

e.g. Bluebird - 360 odd posts.
PMK      - 600  odd posts (well only a few were odd)

And then there are "xxxxx" like me who are new to modelling but loads of time on my hands to chat with millions of postings, mostly drivel, reaching the rank of Rear Vice President Of the Galaxy.

And I did feel a bit of a fraud.

So I am happyier with the level playing field

Although I did think along the lines of Colin

Count me along with Tiger.  Quantity and quality are two separate things.  There have been some who have posted with nothing more than the intention of building up to an extra star.

Seems I'm fighting a losing battle then. Bummer.

Seriously though, when Martin first introduced that star rating system, how many of us thought it was a naff idea? I mean, we all knew (or at least, most of us knew) that all those cute stars and all those numbers were pretty meaningless anyway, right? And we didn't take long to suss out the ones abusing the system, and we didn't take long to suss out the genuine ones, right again? But hang on a minute. Who cares if it was naff? Who cares if some members were posting like Billy-o in order to up their star rating? From where I'm sitting I get the impression that the whole thing was purely a fun thing. Do any of you actually believe that I thought meself more important than those with fewer stars than I? Nah - it doesn't work that way. For my part the rating system was a bit of an eye opener because it was the first time I'd seen any such system. I guess I come to enjoy seeing all those stars, and seeing who actually deserved them - and who didn't. It was never meant to be taken THAT seriously, was it?
It's a shame you guys opted out, because you had a neat little thing going on there. This was the only forum in the whole of the UK with a bit of tongue-in-cheek how's-yer-father light-hearted nonsense... and it worked. T'was one of Mayhem's better ideas. Shame it had to go.

Anyways, t'was only a bleedin' fun thing, for Gawd sakes. Lighten up a bit. Most members don't need any rating system to tell them who's the bozo and who isn't. But you have to admit it WAS funny to see 'Admiral of the Fleet' next to the names of those who clearly wouldn't know their 'arris from their elbow.

The way some of the "experts" on here waffle on about their expertise don't think that would be a fair comparison. I have seen "one liners" on here that have answered a query in a way everyone can understand and I have seen experts who waffle on in tech speak, for paragraph after paragraph and no one knows what the devil they are on about.

How about replacing the stars with  ...Modeler or trader,  new members would then know if the information was without bias.

PMK and Bigfeller,
I was talking to a relative newcomer to the forumand he was put off by not questioning an Admiral. The theory being that the Admiral had been on here much longer so he SHOULD know what he is talking about.
Only one problem the person concerned was an old skipper of mine who had been at sea since the age of 14, he has far more knowledge of Full Size ships than almost anyone on here.
The rank system was detrimental to him posting, even though he knew some of the posts were WRONG.
To me, anything that discourages postings should be seriously looked at.

Sorry Proteus, that not possible with the forum software.......

I do know what you mean though as the moderators and I have had to lock and delete certain topics on here due to
people using the forum to sell good they are making without being "up front" about it.

To me, there are 3 categories of sales:

Traders - Model Slipway, Westbourne Models, Action etc.
Shed sellers - Jeog, PKM, etc.
Modellers - that are just selling off there spare stuff.

It is a shame to loose the stars I thought it was a bit of a novelty and a bit of fun. I assume all are equal until they prove otherwise. Perhaps I should also change from being on here as 'Captain Povey', chosen for no other reason than a reference to the Old Navy Lark radio program that I enjoyed in case I offend any real Captains. Ah well, that's a different ball game altogether. Some of us post under our real names, some prefer aliases, some seem to have split personalities and post under more than one ID. Takes all sorts.... ::)
