Viva Italia :) Vaporetta motabattello Veneziano
« on: July 09, 2006, 04:55:14 pm »

Hi All,

I am currently building Panart/ Mantua? Vaporetto Motobattello Venziano kit. I am a very experienced R/C modeller, currently? I have a Robbe Atlantis Schooner in progress, but fancied a break.

I have always fancied? having a go at POF ( plank on frame), but never had the B*lls to take one on.. ;)

This is around? 4 weeks progress so far....... I am quite enjoying the experience, though this natural wood stuff. take a bit of getting used to? ;D , I am more confident with ABS, G/F kits !!? ? ?

The experience, of making a model boat from a flat pack..... is infinately more enjoyable than something from MFi or Ikea? :D , though, I confess, it does seem harder work than my "regular kits"

I am documenting the build in "another place"

http://www.modelshipworld.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=192&start=0

It's okay, the site owner is a friend of Martins.... ;D

I shall post periodic progress here... but the full build is still in the other place..

I hope you enjoy looking, as much as I am building ;)

BTW her vital stats are : Scale 1:28. Length 830mm, Width 180mm, Height 180mm

Made a start on the "Captains Cabin" ( as Panart call it) I prefer, The wheelhouse... ;D

All laser cut ply parts..... but they do require a lot of fettling /chamfering to get a decent fit.. any gaps will be filled with my old friend, woody filler? ;)

More soon.

The interior as supplied is very "spartan "
I hope to improve on this  ;) here's a pic of the prototype cabin.

Great job you're making of that Steve. I'm really enjoying watching the build as it all comes together. I looked at one of these kits quite closely - but ended up with yet another submarine!

Thanks for the kind words Andy, ;)

I am enjoying the build, it is, massively different, working entirely with wood, compared to my previous builds, it is an experience, any model boat builder should try? ;D.

Encouragement, always help spurs one on? ;D

Cheers

More work on the Captains Cabin (aka Wheelhouse)
Takes a lot of sanding, filling, sanding sealer, sanding & painting....... but getting there .... slowly  :D

Here it is, loosely fitted to the hull,  before and after  primer spraying.

Still more to do....... but coming along nicely methinks ;)

Thanks Pointy, ;)

Build for yourself matey, enjoy it, each model  you build will be better than the previous one.?

You will also get much better at covering your c*ck ups... up !

As I do..... ;)
(believe me they are there.... I just get better at hiding them? :D )

Just to show, it all goes t*ts up? for us all? :-[

This morning I intended to spray the hull with clear coat..... shook the rattle can, for the prescribed period, test spray.... yup fine.......

After? a couple of passes.......cough, splutter, splat, squirt , drip.......arrgh....... no longer a bloomin spray its a bloomin jet !! argghhh? :'(

Almost came to loss of temper & stamp on it job........ but I walked away..... left it to dry and carried on with the cabin..... ;)

Upon my return, with todays wonderful temp of 32 degrees ! it had dried....

Rubbed down , with wet n dry paper, progressively using finer papers..... masked off and resprayed, above and below waterline..... now left overnight to dry

Back on track ? I hope so? :)

Steve? ?

Whilst waiting literally for paint ( clearcoat) to dry........ :'(

I continued with the cabin build, and the glazing and window frames.....

Still more to do yet...... a captain figure...... lighting..... perhaps a clipboard with his rota on....

Check out the clocks...... dont really mean anything, but made those on the pc? :D and a little microphone for the passenger announcements...

This weekend, I have continued with my "Vappy" build, now made a start on the superstructure frames. They are all slotted,as are the longerons , so they are simply glued and slotted into position.

She's starting to look like the real thing now...... ;D

I couldnt resist loose fitting a side wall panel, just to see how it looks ;D

magic  ;)

Also added the motor & rudder servo.... Next I need to order a esc, receiver and more crystals...
Another £60...... Who said model boating was cheap  ;)

Cheers matey  :D

Today saw a little more progress ( the house is going to rack and ruin while I build this, neglecting all the chores...... who cares  ;D )

Found a front cover of an  Italian national newspaper on the web, copied it to pc, then jiggled about between paint & word..... shrunk it down.... and voila...... the Captain has his daily  newspaper on the dashboard  ;D

....... what can I say! Mega stuff - a stroke of genius - I love it.  :)

Actually I'm beginning to take a real fancy to it... but with the kits I've still got to build... and my wish list ain't shrinkin' any, I really shouldn't! :-\

More progress, ;)

You do realise I am completely neglecting my house, garden chores,  family etc  ;D he hee

Thoughts turned to lighting.

The vappy carries up to 150 passengers......so populating her,is really NOT an option  :(

So mine will be either entering or ending service, with just the crew on board.

I shan't bother illuminating the passenger cabin, just be happy with nav lights, stern light, wheel house light and front spot.

Mantua / Panart, supplies a nice "solid" metal spot casting to which one glues a solid wooden dowel.. not much use for realistic lighting  :(

SO I drilled out the casting, added the bulb, glued a plastic tube to it, tested and painted up....

voila..... luvly jubly  ;D

a few more details, the kit comes with two 1/28 scale fire extinguishers, I painted those up.

Dunno why piccy is so crap though :(

Also I made up some rough "wing mirrors".......  I need to tidy these up...

and yes, they have two, one on port and starboard ahead of the captain, secured to the roof /ceiling.....

Has to keep an eye on those high speed Riva Aquarama's & gondolas I expect ;D

Yuk, a pet hate of mine, this bit.....  :(

Wire Bending..........has to be the worst part of this build !!

Panart supply some nice 1mtr lengths of an alloy type wire...... which has to be cut into many, many lengths....... well over a hundred pieces, I cant recall the exact qty.

These then have to be "bent" into all the wonderful parts on the plan, that make up the seats.....arghhhhhhh.  :o

How I do really hate this part of any build !!

I must confess to getting some "outside help with this " as I just couldn't get into it at all....... some may call this "cheating"..... I call it "outsourcing"...

My sincere thanks to my pal Richard Haywood for obliging as my "seating contractor".

These are the constituent parts that make up a single bench seat..

There are 22 of these units + 2 longer units + 12 single chairs...

The Contractors "me ;D" have started to install the seating into the p"bottom"enger area, this is necessary before the side walls are fitted.

Also took the opportunity to download some "real" Venice Vaporetto routes off the web, and using MS Word, & Paint, shrunk them down to scale size, so the p-a-s-s-engers will have the necessary route information. ;D

( Bloomin daft word not allowed killer !! )
