Mtroniks Viper Marine 15 ESC
« on: March 12, 2008, 10:17:05 PM »

Hello
I wonder if anyone could help me solve the problem of trying
to install a Mtroniks Viper Marine 15 speed control
When I connect the red & black wires to the 6volt battery
red to red & black to black smoke appears from the ESC along with
a rather unpleasant smell.
This happens whether or not the motor wires are connected to the ESC
what am I doing wrong, or could the ESC be faulty ?
Thanks...Trevor

though you have connected red to red and black to black, are the wires off the battery actually on the right lugs?

the fact that smoke has come out may mean its kipp'd already

I have seen this happen to 2 speed controllers from MTroniks.
There was no reverse polarity or any other incorrect wiring
Send it back to where you got it from

Thanks for that ...The wires from the battery are on the correct lugs
I can't see that I have done anything wrong so I suppose it must be faulty.

I dont' mean to hijack this thread...but I have a question along these lines and rather than start a new thread and cause clutter I thought I'd tag along. ;)

There are some some loose rumors floating around my corner of the USA that Mtroniks Viper Marine ESC's are experiencing some manufacturing issues. I run a one year old 15amp Viper Marine and would buy another one in a heartbeat. I was wondering if anyone could share any recent experience with these units before I part with my hadr earned dollers.

Many thanks!

Only ever once had a problem with one and funnily enough it was a 10amp one got quite a few in different boats but I prefer Action anyway

Batteries reversing polarity discussion
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=6677.0

If that happened then a low value fuse would have protected the ESC

M/Troniks have an excellent service so if your s/c is scuppered, fire it off to them and they will look after you. Like most electronics, there will always be a rouge unit which won't play ball but unlike some cheapo units which can be bought off the net, buying from a reputable company like M/Troniks ensures you will get a good back up service. I have seen a few modellers buy cheap units to save money and when they go into meltdown mode they then realise the rubbish bin is their only option and end up spending twice as much.
Stick it in the post and you will find the service from m/Troniks is pretty rapid.
