RN Signal Pennants
« on: April 04, 2008, 07:11:41 pm »

Dear All,

Does anyone know please what the 1939 two signal flag (or pennant), signal was for 'Engage Enemy'. I have the sheets, just need to know the relevant flag/pennant numbers. It is the 1939 - 45 RN Code I need please, not the International Code.

Regards, Bernard

hi there, I am at present reading a book - yes I can read  ;D Motor Gunboat 658 and in there they state 'Whilst engaging the enemy - they hoisted Flag 4' which indicated that they were engaging the enemy to the rest of the Fleet.

Now, whether this Flag 4 is a number 4 flag; which was a square flag - blue horizontal stripe, white horizontal stripe and red horizontal stripe - one under another.    Or, was it a special Pennant signal flag which was a black and white - I have reservations about this because next to it says Church Pennant.

The more one reads into this the more complicated it becomes.....got to be an easy way around it.

Cant find it anywhere John. A couple of battle ensigns are looking good at the moment. :embarrassed:

Nelson hoisted No.16 at Trafalgar. "Engage the enemy more closely".   :-\

Dear All,

Thankyou for your effort and help... much appreciated.

A few weeks ago I found some excerpts from Code Books on the I.net - misslaid the Links just at the moment but I will post them on here for all your gnrl. interest. I found most other signals, except for this one rather important one!

So far No.4 does looks promising, but I look forward to seeing what gnrl. consensus is reached.

Thankyou again.

Regards, Bernard
