Thought it was the Revell, i have been after one of those kits for a while, after seeing yours i'm even more desperate to get one. I like the colour you chose for the rust, and also the way you applied it to the boat, very authentic! Any chance in letting me know the colour for the rust, and the way you applied it?...oh and would it be possible for you to post some inside shots of the electrical layout?

Nice work!

Sorry I don?t have any shots of the layout and in fact this shot was taken on first trip to the lake and I was not happy with the motor too powerful so will fit gear of some kind and the electronic speed controller is being changed too.

As for the rust and dirt my method is a little free hand and no exact colour.

Items you need - Humbrol 82 Matt Orange, Humbrol 33 Matt black, fine brush, new bottle of thinners, kitchen roll, a CD cover and two steel nails.

Ok put the nails in water and leave outside for few weeks till nice and rusty.

I paint the dirt first after what your to paint has been drying for at least a week, take the black and brush, and fold up a piece of kitchen towel until its about 20-30mm at the end then soak with clean thinners with the brush dab on a small brush load once and in light vertical strokes with the kitchen towel wipe off till just a vertical smudge remains and repeat over whole boat (but remember don?t leave too much dirt effect on, if after the boat is finished you think it needs more that?s easy to do but you cant take it off easy if you think its too much).

Now for the rust bring in the nails and let them dry and when ready to paint wet one I try to get the mixed paint tone (not colour) to about 75% to the dry tone, that is a little darker than the dry nail

Take the CD cover and put 4-6 drops of orange on it and fill the brush with black and mix in (only a little black needed). now apply where you want the rust, spots, vertical along a plating seam horizontal where ever you want and then rub off as with the dirt in vertical strokes till just a rust smudge remains and again remember it easy to add more later hard to remove too much. if you add a spot of dirt or rust and you think its in the wrong place as long as its wet you can remove it completely by keeping rubbing.

That?s about it just practice, look at pictures of real boats of type to judge how much to apply.

Thanks very much for the tech tip! As soon as my boat arrives i shall try your application method. If i can get something that looks like yours, then i will be more than happy.

Kind regards: Voyager.

A very beautiful job, the weathering is very authentically done and what a great but simple way of getting good profile shots, the angle of the shot makes the weight of the ship look so realistic, will have to try that, without dropping the camera hopefully...
