Model Slipway Working Navigation Buoy
« on: March 25, 2008, 07:33:51 pm »

Started this a while back, but the thread was removed as I went off me modeling for abit  :P I started working on this as a distraction from my Tsekoa II. 99% is straight from model slipway, with the exception of the rivets and electronics which has yet to be fitted. It's slowly taking shape, having trouble with the ring at the top  >>:-( Can't seem to get that right no matter what I try??? Time for plan B lol

Hi Voyager

Here's mine. Took me three days, so I know how you feel.

The ring surface at the top cannot be fabricated to give perfection, so I used a plastic carton and cut the rim from that.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that tip Ken - I built one of these some time ago for a Conserver and never got that ring truly circular. I have another kit bought to go with my Tsekoa, which I haven't bothered to make - I will give it a go now :)

Thanks for that Ken, nice one  O0

A little bit more got done tonight, painted up the top section and glued it in place. I lightly sprayed track dirt from the Phoenix Paint range, thinned down for light applications. The bright orange is just the base coat for the rust, it's a mixture of MIG Standard Rust and MIG Acrylic Resin dabbed on with an old paint brush. Once this has had time to dry out, I shall start applying Scenic Rust in a random pattern, then once this is dry I thin down MIG Light Rust with thinners until it's almost like water and apply it around the heavy rust areas.
The bottom section is now complete and I'm happy with the results  :)

Many thanks Tug Kenny  ;)

Done some more last night, only the ring to find and fit. I fitted a clear LED case to the top, that so far has had a top and bottom coat of black, now all that's needed is a top coat of green. I will order some flashing LED's sometime next week, looking forward to having some ballast in her and to see it working  ;D

The top ring has now been added, although it still requires weathering to blend it in to the rest of the buoy. The two other buoys have now been built and painted. The only modifications were the bolt heads on the hatches on all three, plastic rubbing strip on the mooring buoy was replaced with a rubber version. I haven't decided if i'm going to weather the other two, I might keep these factory fresh  :)

Nice workmanship.

Had a little accident with mine at the local 'Show'. Someone dropped it on the floor and the glued-in weight inside has broken loose.

It now rattles like a baby's toy and there is no way to access it, apart from cutting it open.  :(  Have you weighted yours?

Thanks!

Oh no what wrotten luck Ken >>:-( You could always put a patent on it and flog it to Mother Care  {-) Then again, on the other hand you could drill a small hole underneath and glue the weight back in place, then after cut a round peice of plasticard to plug the hole?

As mine is designed to come apart i'm going to glue some round lead weights in afterwards Ken.

Brilliant idea. Thank you for that.  Just a tiny hole and pump in the glue.   O0

Cheers...ken

A wee hole in the base, a wee dod of PVA through a hypodermic needle and keep vertical for a day or so - should do the trick?
