It depends on what type of model.
Lead acid gel cells are extremely useful for ballast as well as motive power.
They are more efficient with a longer discherge rate.
For lightness and high power applications nicads are a better bet.

Your present set-up gives 5.7AH at 7.2 volts.  Reducing to 6 volts will reduce performance accordingly as the current drawn, and hence power delivered, and almost certainly the speed, will be reduced.  Because the current drawn is reduced, run time will be increased, by a fairly uncertain amount.  This assumes that the same motor is retained - replacement with a lower voltage equivalent will increase the current to get back to the same power level.
You can weigh your existing batteries, and look at sites like maplin who give information about their products to find out how much the SLA(s) weigh.
SLAs are good for moderate output over a long run, nicads for surviving high output.

The advantage of ni-cads is that you can charge from the car battery when your batteries are flat, a big advantage if you are at a weekend show

hi speed isnt an issue its a scale battleship just thought about converting to gel bat as  they look cheaper than ni-cad and i dont need three chargers at once.

modelman66,
I always use Gel Cells in large warships for the ballasting, the more batteries the longer the duration.
And when removed the lighter the model is for recovering.

They go from a 3 foot HDML, 4 foot Schutze Minesweeper, 5 1/2 foot 1/72 Type 21 Frigate, 6 foot 1/48 Hunt Class Destroyer and a 10 1/2 foot Prinz Eugen under construction.
I have sold off quite a few recently to leave me with these warships.
They all run with Gel cells for ballast and power.
