Fixing propshaft on new build.
« on: June 09, 2018, 07:42:32 pm »

In order to fix the propshaft/tube into the hull of my new build should I have the motor and coupling and mounting plate connected and  in place before gluing or is that normally done after tube is fixed?

Personally no, provided you have templates that provide the required clearances internally and externally you should be fine, then tack superglue, when happy go for epoxy or car filler, glassfibre.

There's nothing like getting conflicting views  {-)

So here I go - I like to fit the motor, coupling and propshaft at the same time so as I know that the whole lot lines up nicely.  We are all different so I guess its up to you how do it.

Thanks for both replies!

I've had to connect all the components to get some sort of sensible alignment for the prop tube, so it seems appropriate to leave motor and coupling connected,
screw the motor down onto mtg plate and lay in the glue.
I'm just hesitating at the gluing stage in case I was missing something important.

Thanks guys.

I have a set of coupling alignment tools, which replace the flexible coupling to get correct alingment between prop and motor.

Are these home made or shop bought, TOF?
Got quite a few hulls I need to mate with shafts, props and motors soon and none with plans so I'm trying to do everything I can to get it right. If I can buy or make something to make it easier I'll leap at it!

I got them as a job lot 2 years ago, but they are ready made, select the two ends and slide together.
