Well after weeks of umming and erring i finaly went for it and ordered the Pibber from kehrer, in germany. Between my pc, me, them, and the bank, it was quite a painfull process. I did ask for it to be dellivered to work as there is never anybody in. Was excpecting it to arrive torwards the end of this week, double suprise it turned up wensday, and there was someone in to collect it. Result, take that as a omen. Once i had opened and dumped all the packaging i was more than suprised at the quality of the hull moulding. Done with cloth, and resin. Very smooth on the inside, as opposed to the lumpy and delaminating results i have come to excpect. The other thing that suprised me was the lack of either a drawing or measurements to show the best place to position the jets. But there are destructions on assembling the Jets. Apart from the positioning i am not worried as this is a simple build (famous last words).Will make it a bit more interesting. Have E-mailed them to get some advice but seeing as i mailed them 3 times before i bit the bullet, and never getting a reply, i am not holding my breath.

Any way, getting under way.

The first thing was to wash the hull, with soapy water and a nylon scouring pad, amazing the colour of the water after this.
While this was drying i got out my Tamyia, 3-D plans, and started making some measurments. Once dry i marked, over size for now, the top edge of the hull to cut it back. Did'nt take long with a new diamond cutting wheel. Kept the hoover running to keep the dust down. Then i will glue strips of plastic on the under side of the hull lip to smooth it out, give it some more depth and as a surface to fix the deck wells to. Want to get the decks and wells sorted out roughly before fixing the jets so i can juggle all the items to get the most access.

Hi Colin which jet units are you using and motors? I fancy building one of these but couldnt decide which was the best way to power it

Went with what Kehler recomend. One of my mistakes was to order the reverse, steering extra's. Not realizing one actuly comes with the jet unit. The motors, again what kehler reckomend. No idea what the performance will be. Judging by the DVD that comes with the "kit" fast. Well there other boats are. Would have rathered some hint on where to position the units.
Sorry but i realy can not permitt you to have one, thought i would be a minority. perhaps that way i can get a better deal from out goverment. LOL.

If you do, find another way to pay rather than money transfer, cost me an extra £20 quid, plus they cocked up and also charged Kelher.

i would scratch build mine i think i've had enough of kits with my u-47 build, have you been on the gamekeepers of vietnam site there's lots of info there from the vets.
I assumed the reverse gear was extra so i'll bare that in mind. do you know what the displacement will be it's not great from what i recall so i wasn't sure what batteries to use but i was scaling off a very bad drawring. there has been a restoration of a mk2 that used conventional prop shafts so if i went that rout it would still be scale

funnily enough, i have had enough of scrath build's. Wanted someting that was hopefully tried and tested.
To fit the drives Kerher have made some compomises at the rear end, can see why.
No, the reverse is not extra, i had just not read the info properly and ordered a different version, which i didnt need.
Graupner do a jet drive, no idea of the power output, but i did see that it had solid bearings, considering these need revs to work, dont think they would be up to the job.
No i hadnt been on to that site, will give it a go.

Thanks for that, loads of usefull piccies. dont know how I never found it. Spent weeks typing in every combination of anything I could think of to do with boats, vets, marine, navy, brown water, and loads of other things. So Ta.
Any way, had a productive weekend, (girl freind ain't too chuffed) measuring, thinking, and cutting plastic.
got the side wllas in on the deck wells, and the engine compartment. Now remember i was saying there were no plans with this kit?, so i am using the Tamyia Pibber, and scaling up, didnt work. Ran out of room by the time i got to the front of the wheelhouse. could not work out what had gone wrong. I also found that the wheelhouse was not deep enough. Did some checking and found the "Error". The model is at 1/12, so scaling from the 1/35th "plan" i had to multilpy measurments by 2.9. So, measured the length of the model and divided this into the actual lenghth. Lo and behold, it turned out to be 1/13th. When i applied the new scale factor, everything now worked out. Go figure. So unless I have missed a trick, cocked up, the new factor is 2.6. It works.

Had some real problems getting the drives to fit. The round hole for the outlet turned in to an oval to get the back plat to fit the stern square, and keep the drives perpinicular to the stern. All sorted now.

and no, not got a clue how to do that. not going to start filling baths then running down the road shouting eurela! and her who must be obeyed would string me up by the prverbials if i started slopping water all over the place. no good asking Kerhler, they dont seem to answwer mail unless there is money in it for them.

Just wandered what the motor battery combination was going to be if you were having to keep weight down. i worked the displacement out from some scale drawrings but can't remember what it was but it was fairly light

i realy dont know. the motor is quite a lump, plan on running it with 2 packs of 7 cells, at the very least('cos i have one handy, good place to start) and modern batteries are lighter, i have my fingers crossed. if need be i will go to lipos or something. watch this space.

Lots of progress this week, not alot at work at the moment so getting home a bit earlier, nice, for now.
Just a phew fotos of progress. Jets in place, and well potted, then blended in with the hull.
this weekend i am sorting the linkages, not too simple. Fun.
The one job i havnt thought aboutb yet is fitting the forward deck, that is not going to be fun. real challenge.

Are you building the MK1 or MK11 ?

I scratch built a MK11 1/16 scale about 4 yrs ago now still going strong, performance is ballistic, very very fast, if you open it up in the bath you will empty it in about 3 mins !!

I opted for a single jet drive in the end, tried 2 drives but it just added weight !

Got some pics if anyone is interested.

Just finished working out and bulding the steeering likages, now got to work out how to do the reversing buckets.

couple more photos. still boring, not alot of visible progress, but the motors are mounted, the sterring sorted, and the reversing buckets now work.
i was dreading fiiting the forward deck, because of the return on the top of the hull. was going to make it very dificult to measure down and mark the deck line. the answer was a peice of cake. the wheelhouse was placed in position and a beam temporarily fixed to it. this was then glued to the hull. when the glue had set the wheelhouse was pulled of leaving the beam behind. now i drilled through at the top of the beam. then a line was struck around the outside of the hullat this height. then i drilled a few small holes along this line and poked thin piano wire throughboth sides. then balsa wood was glued th the inside of the hull so the top edge was up against the wire. two level supports for the deck. easy.

Funnily enough thats why i put the project on back burner i thought i'd found a project not many had done but when i did my research i found to the contrary there's quite a few out there so the search goes on.

Just about every craft has been modelled by someone, somewhere at some time or another, if you are looking for something unique you might try behind the old iron curtain, the Eastern block have some unique craft, not often modelled ...as yet,
but you have to do a lot of time consuming research if you want to " GO WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE "
