Newbie says Hi

Hi to all
My name is Steve & I am an inexperienced newbie.
I recently joined The Southland Society for Model Engineers  Invercargill New Zealand as my son received a remote control boat for xmas and we needed some where to sail it, since then he has now moved on to modeling trains and I have taken over in the RC Model boats. The club members got me started on a easy first model of a Merchant Vessel but frustration got hold of me not having a boat to run on sail days, so I purchased the Iteleri PT5496 hoping this would be a quick way of getting something on the water....... this was my first of many beginners mistakes, I then got hold of the Billings Tug Zwarte Zee which had been started yes I thought most of the hard work done..........only to find the reason for not being completed the boat needs to be stripped back and started again and the label reading "for experienced modelers", on to my next one, so now I have a model of the Thornycroft A.S.R.Launch all made up and fitted with running gear but still with a few frustrations but at least I can use it on Sail days and with winter comming on have time to tidy her up and hopefully get her running better.
I know this sounds like a drawn out introduction but my club mates tell me this is the best Forum to be in for help and advice and I wanted to let you know what you could be letting yourselves in for as please i do need help !!!! Thanks

Hi Steve

Welcome the our club forum. You should be able to find all the answers to your boaty queries on here.

You'll find we're a friendly bunch with plenty of banter and such diverse subjects, you'll wonder if you've any time left for sailing your fleet.

Winter coming eh !! We've yet to see a decent summer over here. Since I've been retired, I've only seen two weeks of sun in one go. ;D

Welcome Steve,

Kenny is spot on. This is a great forum full of great chaps and lasses always ready to help. All you have to do is ask..

As for the banter, well Kenny, I though it was all serious :-\ :-\

Great fun though....No time left to sail...

Just to add a follow-up comment about our weather in the UK.  I was always given to understand that it was 8 months of winter and 4 months of bad weather - could be wrong - could be 10 and 2.   :( :( :)

The sun came out today ................. the Mrs thought it would be a good idea to go shopping, just as I was contemplating taking my latest build to the lake.  Aghhhhhhh!  :o

hi there from up north. ashburton to be precise. good to see you on board.  just a bit of info. you may or may not be interested in.   there is a model train show (for your boy of course) on in dunedin this weekend.

Welcome Steve you will get all the advice you need and more on here, just ignore those Aussie comments about sheep. As most of my immediate family live on North Island I know they're not true.
Well the weather is beautiful today, must go back to the shed now.

I have to say the responses from posts I have posted have been fantastic.

persevere steve once you start to achieve results you will be so pleased it will be worth all the grind and expense and once you have one to sail it seems to go so much better.

Hi Steve,
Another welcome from a newbie as well. I've only been into the modelboat hobby for the past year since I started building the Hachette build, Bismarck. Then when I found the local club for advice, I wanted a quick build to get on the water. Well, whilst on holiday back in Canada, my brother made a present of the HMCS Snowberry to do some plastic magic, when I got home and opened the box :D I realized this would not be a quick build. Not to be daunted I purchased the Ripmax Carlson RTR tug as a Christmas gift for myself. This is a lovely scale craft which performs well, but on sailing days you could see that having an RTR vessel is not the same as having built your own.
So I commenced work on a birthday gift of the RTTL Vosper from Model Slipway, and 5 months later, ( bit of a perfectionist me ) I was sailing about with the satisfaction of having done the whole build myself, with of course, the help of all the knowledgeable and friendly folks on this site.
So welcome aboard and happy building and when ever your frustration gets to you come here for advice.
