HFM kits..
« on: May 23, 2008, 08:25:53 am »

Just sort of wondering, has anyone had a go the HFM Deep Dive kit? Or is even still available? I can remember it coming out years ago, but I've never seen a completed one yet.

Hi Rich,

Here's a few photos of mine. I've changed the flanged watertight box with about 30 screws holding it together with a Lock & Lock food storage box (HPL815D). Only 4 clips to undo and airtight. Needed to use silicone sealant to hold everything in place though. Looks good in swimming pools especially with the leds I've fitted.
Try Midway Models of Leicester (0116 2701609) if you're still interested.

Good grief...that's the first one I've seen completed, very nice job too if I may say so sir. I like the radio box modification, much easier to use I'll wager?

Having contemplated another sub, another steam launch and even a warship, I think one of these would fit my criteria very nicely indeed. I have a modified conning tower in mind though...something slightly bigger with a rotating searchlamp built in/on.

Thanks for the info, very much appreciated.

Here's something I designed and built years ago for AMS displays, just knocked up out of balsa, ply scraps and odd fittings I had laying about. It was published in the AMS mag 'In Depth' in the early '80s. We called it 'SEAQUEL'...it worked for a bit, but it was never really successful, and having a Darnell U boat on the slipway, it was scrapped and the radio gear put to better use in U-441.

I like your style, Mr Boot. Fifty-eight years young and still dabbling with Thunderbird's stuff.
Big respect to you, sire!

Note to Terry:
Mate, what has a man got to say or do in order to twist your arm in letting me have a little play with that vessel? I love it already!
I've never seen one of those before. Can we see a photo of its working LEDs?

If I'm not stepping on Richie's toes, do you mind if I too bung a few Qs your way?

More questions equals more information for me, so keep them going sir...you'll not be on my toes at all! I'd never seen a completed one, HF did bring one to a show we did once and everyone was very impressed with it, but then we never saw one in operational state...until now.

More pics and more info please, Mr Faraday's cage sir, if you please!

PMK, I've sailed the model at Pontins - Brean Sands for the 2 last years in their swimming pool.  So near yet so far PMK. That event is moving to Unity Farm this year but the dates have changed and at the moment I cant make it.  :'(

Looks good especially with the leds on. See photos.

Heres a photo of radio box. Note that the motor (a 545) is mounted upside down on an aluminium frame (just worked out better for space that way up).
Battery - 9.6v 1800mAh pack - top left.
Rudder servo - top right
Front Dive planes - bottom left
Mtroniks Esc - centre left
Rx with xtal holder uppermost - bottom right
2 way switcher (not used now but left in for balance) is just above rx.
The 2 red wires centre bottom that disappear under motor mount go to an auto reset fuse.

The 2 way switcher gave intermittent problems so it's now disconnected.
The rear dive planes are fixed.

Any questions then let me know.

That's terrific sir, thanks very much for that...it's a very impressive looking thing, quite taken with that. Methinks that the Gato will be queing for the slipway.

Thanks again FC,

Hey, Terr - you're obviously a man of neat ideas. I like the way you managed to shoehorn all the gubbins in one watertight container. The way you have everything located seems to have worked out just dandy. I like, I like!
The LEDs look good and all. I would imagiine the whole things looks dead sleek when she's in the water... all them LEDs glowing.
So one question: why haven't you mentioned this baby sooner? Like I said, I've not seen a ship like that before. The nearest thing I've seen (as Tiger noted) is Thunderbird 4. So I guess I owe Richie a beer, because if it weren't for him I'd never had known such a thing existed even.
So if it's okay by you, a couple more questions...
I googled Midway Models, but didn't have much luck. Thing is, I'm dead keen on building one like yours but I don't know where to begin. Richie has got the lead on me because he's already built his Seaquel. But a ship like this is a whole new ball game to me, so some sharp learning is on the cards. Can you help me out here?
Let's take it from the very beginning. First off, would you happen to have the URL for Midway Models? Secondly, can you give me an approximate figure on what I should expect to pay for a basic kit?
Stop me if I'm putting you on the spot, but it's too late to turn back now. I'm firing on all six cylinders and totally smitten with that model.

Thanks a million, my man.
Thanks to you and all, Richie.

By the by...
Brean sands? Well I'll go to sea! That place is just a couple of towns from here - about 15 miles or so.
What're you doing down this neck of the woods anyhow? I thought you lived miles away.

<Edit>

Damn... I forgot to ask......
Can you tell me some more about your auto-reset fuse? Are we talking Maplin here?

Maybe I can help you sir...Midway Models don't appear to have a website[been there, done that, couldn't find it]but if you google 'HFM Deep Dive', you'll find plenty of model shops pop up for you. Westbourne Models seems to be the main one, they advertise the DD at £90 ish, give or take a quid or two.

I'm going to order me one as soon as the girlfriend reliquishes her vice like grip on her credit card...after building an Engel Patrick Henry and five different Darnell subs, plus the Seaquel and the Model Boats submersible, this looks quite easy for a man of my calibre to build! I only have my desk nowadays as a building bench, the days of a 10' x 8' shed are long gone, more's the pity.

Go to it, young sir...take her down, number one.

Cheers,

Rich

Good for you Rich. Just go easy on the cutting out the mouldings as its easy to cut along the edges. Read twice, cut once.
Midway Models don't have a website but have were local to HFM at the time.
Any questions then don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks FC, I appreciate that..very kind of you. I'm going to alter the outline of mine, do away with that cabin thing on the front and replace it with a flat panel, make a totally different con tower, and I fancy trying to make the rear dive vanes operational as well. Looking at your pics, there seems to plenty of scope[pardon the pun]to do all sorts of silly things with it...

Cheers,

Rich

PMK,
Sorry mate, just seen your post. (Been hell of a week at work with the wind and all that).

Right, Midway models dont have a website, Ian has only just learned to use a calculator (Sorry Ian if you're watchin') Tel no. as advertised in mags is 0116 2701609 (Closed on Mondays)

I see that the kit is advertised on the Westbourne site. Have a look at http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/HFM-Model-Boats.htm for details and cost.

The boat only comes out of the cupboard once a year so I forgot all about it PMK.
Just found this link on you tube which is my boat at Brean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX-mwKWYTxM

I've been going to Brean for quite a number of years now and even got to run the scale boat events for a couple of years.
The resettable fuse was off ebay but similar to Maplins type.

Keep the questions coming guys.
