Not quite the best of weekends!!
« on: June 03, 2008, 08:31:28 pm »

If you've ever wondered what it's like to be in the driving seat of a model racing boat - now's your chance to find out!
Everything was going really well until I had a spin out. Unfortunately the boat decided to keep going for a change and proceeded the wrong way!  Only for a couple of seconds though as another boat was coming the correct way!
The inevitable happened which I now present for your entertainment  {-) {-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ySLXeV7LRw

The boat is repairable, but I have already bought a replacement hull.
The other boat fortunately didn't suffer any damage (must be well built!)
Still managed a 2nd in another class so all was not lost  O0

Hi Danny.
I bet you was glad you had your camera on board. I am still not sure who's boat hit you. Was it Nigel's boat?
What are you going to do? repair or scrap it?
Cheers for the entertainment

Hi Bill
No, it wasn't Nigel, he's innocent - well this time anyway!
I won't name the other driver as it wasn't his fault (but you can see the boat is yellow ;-)
Bernard has offered to repair it for me (he's a good lad) but I've also got hold of a Phantom which I'm going to put together.
Keep me out of mischief for a few weeks.

Yes on closer look at the video I see who it is.  That's boating! My boat lost the cooling water and started to steam, I'm still not 100% sure what block it up . I have now fitted a new pick up point over the prop. Going to test it Sunday. Fingers crossed it works.
Cheers for now

Danny,

I was gutted to see that happen to your boat - especially so early in its life. Sunday was the first time I've seen it start to get some speed up.
Must admit though, what I've seen of the Phantom so far looks good. My shortlist for a new C class boat came down to Giant Apache, Makara, and Phantom. I bought before I saw the Phantom run - I think before Mark had even raced his, and went for the cheapest.
Are you transplanting the CMB .80 from the Magnum - presumably full surface drive ?

I guess ramming the nose - which is almost a cone section, of one boat, into the side - basically a large almost flat section, of another boat, largely explains the difference in damage (ye cannae change the laws o' Physics). Added to that, there's a high probability that the nose of the other boat is full of expanding foam, and there you have it.

Hi Mart
Ian is right, the point of a hull will go through almost anything if it's going fast enough. (I knew I shouldn't have put that camera on it - just ASKING for trouble)  ::)
The Phantom is a Gary Darch/Mark Copley combination (I'm not sure who has done what to it).
Mark has some photos on
http://www.mcopracing.co.uk/index2.html
and is doing well in C class with it.  Gary has now started to get results, he has been experimenting with engines but it now seems to be coming together.

Nice boat Danny i have seen it before and liked what i saw then ,it should be a fast boat  ;) good luck with it .By the way your boat video has been doing the rounds on RCU no i didnt post it but your fame is growing over the pond lol.I know how hard the pointy end can be mate especially if the boats made from wood,my old woody hit concrete at about 25 mph and only made a small dent ,imaging what it would do to another boat  :o.

Oooh! Richard! That last comment was a bit below the waterline! ;-)

Fantastic video Danny, sorry that it had to be at such a cost.  I was surprised at the degree of damage simply because I know Bernard builds those hulls out of concrete-like GRP. I recall he clobbered the wall at Kingsbury without any noticeable ill-effects but that was head-on. The boat that did your Magnum in I know is built like a brick outhouse so that would account for the degree of damage when added to the angle of impact.

Such a shame though as your Magnum was delivering the goods.

The Phantom is a great choice. I think it's Makara/Apache underpinnings with a different topsides design which seems to give it a bit more stability. Can't go wrong with that combination. Looking forward to seeing it on the water. Linky to your shunt on the website BTW ;) - There's no such thing as bad publicity apparently according to Julius Caesar. Seems you are becoming infamous!

[Infamy! Infamy!.... etc]

Cheers Danny

Thanks for the comments chaps.
I wasn't expecting the trial run with the camera to be 'quite' so graphic!!
Bernard is going to execute a wonderous repair for me such that there may well be competition for 'Simon's Concours'  ::)
I think a nice piece of 300 yr old seasoned oak inlaid into the front should do the trick, eh, Mart  O0

Phil, you MUST have seen that old 'Carry On' gag on a repeat - or you're hiding your age well!!
Hey - if the Phantom originally started out as a Makara, does this mean I can join the "Mad Makara Men" - as a DIShonarary member?  (and no rude gags about "members" Dicky)

Regrettably Danny, I am cursed with the sort of memory that can regurgitate huge chunks of scripts/quotes and the Carry On films just lend themselves to it very well. Oddly, many of their finest gags were paraphrases of real quotes, much like the "chuck it in the basket, I'll read it later...." gag from the Revolutionary scene. It's an ability of no use nor ornament other than in padding out posts on fora.....   ;)

So with apologies to both Messrs Twain ["I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right."] and Behan, [There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary] the publicity of your your infamy, or more properly, your fame, is well deserved and the Magnum's obituary is a way off yet!

Just to clarify the spelling: The name is BELL, DANNY BELL!

Schplendid....

Cheers! ;)

I can't see any resemblance myself  {-)
Since the Makara is (allegedly) also a b*****d son of the Giant Apache, presumably the Makara and Phantom are brothers.

Now that you point it out Ian, there does seem to be a certain similarity  {-)
It only adds pressure to me now, as I can't complain that my poor results are due to an untried design  ::)
See you Sunday
