Nothing quite as dramatic but when I tested my new DX6i I went to the top of the drive, probably only a couple of hundred feet away but with the transmitter on test (low output for range testing) and the model sat behind two motorbikes, a car and the garage door it worked perfectly.  My old crystal sets wouldn't even look at such a test.

I might just go for a walk one day now just to try it!!

OK so now I have an idea for a radio that can cope with sailing my 1:10 Ark Royal.  O0

Only kidding.

I think Bunkerbarge already has. If his receiver can hear the transmitter from 200 paces, while on low power, and make it past two motorbikes AND a metal garage door.......
Don't forget, the Spanish guy was perched up a mountain, pretty much line-of-sight to his buddy down below. They were testing in near-perfect conditions. So I guess that if you compare that to a real-life scene with model boats at ground level, then BB's 200-pace test is not bad at all.

How you doing down there, Bas?
How's life in the land of sunshine?

Noob question.
Can you actually see a model boat at 450+ yards?

regards
Gary :)

Errr... Yes.... But not which direction it's travelling in - which can be a problem ;)

"How you doing down there, Bas?

PMK,

Pretty good thanks amigo, mind you summer has arrived with daily temperatures above 30 degrees C. (Thats over 86 degrees in old money)...

The comment from Garym and the admission from Robert that you cannot see the model properly at 496 yards, suggests that it is quite pointless being able to operate the control over large distances.....No point to it at all!!

:D

The point is to answer the perpetual worriers "Will it be ok to use this new 2.4ghz tech-mo-nology at our pond?" or "How far can you use this 2.4ghz malarkey?"

The answer is pretty much that if it is effective at controlling surface craft at distances way beyond effective visual range, it's more than good enough to control surface craft inside effective visual range.

Sure enough :) I know a 40mhz F-14 or FC-16 is.

Which white speck is yours?

The one on the right or the one on the left?

Is it coming towards us?

"But the  same can be said for most decent radio sets...."

True, true. And that's the whole point. 2.4 users need to be reassured that their new set-up's work just as good as. It's even more reassuring when you can walk around with a 2.4 set without fear of sticking a telescopic antenna up someone's bracket, or snagging it in the hedge, or.....
2.4GHz is still unchartered waters for most of us.

Footski:
A few weeks ago I'm down at B&Q and got meself enough PVC pipe to cobble together a makeshift anemometer. I had it wired to one of those bike computers, and according to my calculations, we got a wind speed tonight of 51,247 mph.
I just went outside to check my calcs' and the anem' was last seen about three fields away, heading towards space.
In other words, alley and tornado....... not to mention cold (brrr!).

Remind me... what is that thing you call Summer?

PMK,

Now you have to close your eyes and use your imagination......ready.....

Okay...Summer is when everything appears brighter and colours more defined....You only have to wear shorts and it doesn't even cross your mind to put long trousers on......Drinks have to be long, cold and contain alcohol and ice....The garden watering system comes on twice a day......Sunglasses are as important as underwear....Oh and BBQ's become a way of life.....

Lastly......It is too hot to do any boat building in the shed....

if you were to install a really expensive hi tech video camera with some kind of wireless equipment to allow you to view the image on a monitor near by you could open up all kinds of possibilities for modelling.  Probably over the top but at least you know its possible right?
