Shooting anyone?
« on: June 25, 2008, 10:04:47 pm »

Anyone else shoot on here?

Just back from a trip stocking up the village matriach's freezer. Pigeon and rabbit with a couple of crows as well ( who eats crows??  :D :D )

I used to shoot quite a bit - air rifle, shotgun and rifle - but now my shooting is just functional - my village has a bizzare sort of barter system going on so I cull rabbits and pigeons for sacks of horse manure and bedding for my goat. It's now got to the point where people come up to me in the pub and ask me for stuff for the larder.

I used to do organised game shoots, but it didn't seem very ethical - and the posh people don't like a scouser with a 9 shot semi-automatic 12 gauge ( with a proper fire arms certificate to make it legal of course )  turning up - I think I scare them a bit :( ( and possibly they worry about loosing their hub caps )

I also go to the clay pigeon ranges sometimes with friends, but have not yet worked out the point of it. It seems a bit of a waste of time really.

Mrs Steve is not the biggest fan but that's starting to change since she saw a fox chasing after cat number 2 - now it's a bit more acceptable than it was. Now she is learning to shoot with a 20 gauge and is starting to get into it, but only with clays so far.

I do a good bit of shooting
it is either Clay pigeon or Target shooting. I enjoy the clays more I thought I would hate it but it is enjoyable.
I think it is also down to the group of guys I go with where we have a yearly competition where the years
worst shot takes us all out for a curry  O0
I can't shoot any rabbits round where I stay as they are all in hutches {-)

If you can't kill it with one shot then the rest are wasted 'cos there won't be enough left of it to eat!!!
I met a chap with one of those on a hare shoot, we were walking in and a hare rose and was going away from  us....BAM BAM he shot it up the backside, LOL, he then had to carry the thing for 2 miles over ploughed fields..  hhmmm real country man he was!!

I used to go rough shooting before I met the ex-Wife ( before my back gave in ... ) and had 2 12 bores and a Belgium made 1880 side by side hammer action .410 ( beautiful light weight gun 22" barrels and idea for Ferreting for Rabbits ). I had a Rezzini 27" over and under Sportster 12 bore and a Baikal side by side 25" barrel 12 bore. I never shot anything ( apart from Crows ) that I wasn't willing to eat ( Myxamatosis Rabiits never touched how ever... ).

I was a member of a shooting club and we had around 1500 acres of mixed ground , combination of open fields woods and scrub land , on which we shot Pheasant , Partridge , Woodcock , Grouse , Duck , Geese , Rabbits and Pigeon for the pot. We voluntarily didn't shoot Hares in an attempt to boost their numbers and shot as many Foxes and Crows we could. Foxes do a LOT of damage to poultry sheds if they get in , they will kill hundreds and eat only 2 or 3. Crows we shot especially in the early spring to help the Sheep farmers as these little black £$%£%&%$ will kill new born Lambs by pecking out their eyes.

I also did a little clay pigeon shooting but the nearest organised range was at Cove south of Aberdeen and well over an hours drive so didn't go there all that often. I understand and respect other peoples views that we shouldn't shoot any animals , but , the club I was a member of made sure that we agreed to only shoot birds if we were going to take them home and eat them. We also managed the grounds we shot on , bought Pheasant poults to grow on and release ( we only ever shot 20-30% of numbers of the birds we released so we should never have depleted the natural amount of Pheasants on the grounds we shot on ) , made sure that we field walked over the summer to make sure we knew where any Badger sets were ( we always gave these a wide berth so we didn't disturb them and didn't loose a gun dog down a set ) and made sure that we collected any rubbish we found.

I also had access to several hundred acres of farmers fields just outside of Fraserburgh which myself and 4 mates used to go out Ferreting on a regular basis to cull the numbers of Rabbits. The problem out here is that the fields we were ferreting on had Cows or Sheep in them and with the extensive problems of Rabbit warrens all along the field boundaries ( these fields all had a small bank and drainage ditch along the longest side ) meant that if the Cows or Sheep were spooked or just started running along the field edge they stood a big chance of putting a leg right down into a burrow breaking it meaning the animal had to be destroyed loosing the Farmer a lot of money.

9 shots in the tube is ten shots in total - which is great for pigeon shooting from hides. I've had a few 8 bird groups from those ten shots before.

My 12 guage is pretty light - it's a re-worked 23" benelli so can carry it for miles - got sick of lumping an 8lb 32" O/U around the fields and having my arms want to drop off. Made the mistake with my rifle of going for a stainless "Varmint" action and barrel - awesome shot ( sub 1/2 MOA ) but the thing weights an absolute ton. Keep getting the gun smith to lighten it - am now on a compsite skeleton stock and a carbon fiber silencer but now it's a bit un-balanced.

There's worse things to have to carry for a couple of miles than a hare. Try lugging a grolshed deer down off ilkley moor via a series of conifer forests.....

Davie: how many ferrets do you run? My grandad used to work ferrets and lurchers together - no nets -  but I've never been able to pick up the knack of working with ferrets - get absolutely sick of digging the ferret out so don't bother any more - but a few of the older guys in the village use them.

Do you make your own nets? The two local farmers around me are having horrific rabbit trouble. Normally they expect to loose about 1 ton/acre to rabbits ( mostly arable land locally ) but this year they reckon they're loosing two tons/acre which is a huge amount.

Some of the older women in the village are setting too to make a couple of 200 yard Long-Nets to try and help with the problem, and half the village is pitching in soon for a couple of nights of Long-netting. I had a go at the net making, but it seems very slow and pretty difficult, but they seem to be damn quick at it!

I don't think I've shot anything for a good while that hasn't been eaten. Mary - my next door neighbour - takes what ever I and the rest of the local shooters take and cooks it all up - then dishes it out to a lot of the OAP's in the local area. Most days they get a cassarole, burgers, stews etc etc from the shooting.

Back in the mid eighties I formed eagley Field Target Club, in the Bolton area, with a couple of friends of mine. It took off very well. The great Nat Lofthouse was club president at the time and the first winner of the club best shot prize was........you guessed it.....Mrs Footski....

I didn't own any of the Ferrets ( worked away from home a lot back then ) and its my mate Kevin that keeps them ( he has 8 or 10 normally ). We used to take 3 Ferrets with us working each one on a single burrow system each so they didn't get tempted to "snack" on the job. As for nets yes we mad our own , handy being an ex-trawlerman lol.

Many moons ago I used to go shooting with a family friend who used to be in the SAS with my father. He had a farm in the Tummel Bridge area of Perthshire. He also had the shooting rights for 500 acres of land that cost him one penny a year (old penny). If he needed any large boulders cleared from his farm the SAS were invited up to practice their demolition skills and they in turn supplied him with ammunition for his guns.
With this ammunition we used to hunt Bambi and relatives. Oh, and the odd haggis of course. ;)

Heres the only shooting i get to do on a regular basis, its a Airsoft gun (6mm BB gun) Its a French Army standard issue Famas with a few extra toys ive put on to spice her up a bit, now this is the good bit she fires 30-35 rounds a second at the rate of 350 foot per second (the legal limit in force at my local site).
She has a range of about 100 metres and i can and have shot a penny at 60 metres. The launcher holds a gas grenade which holds 78 rounds and will release all 78 rounds at 400fps in a single shot spreading across an area of roughly 20 metres radial (good fun for room clearing)
Im a fully registered UKARA member allowing me to buy the gun and attend special events held by Airsoft sites, believe me when i say this being shot at 10 metres with a 350fps BB gun hurts more then a paintball shot at 1 metre away.

My dad once fired both barrels from his old 12bore at a Jerry 109 that had frightened a few geese he was after, the pilot did a low pass and stuck both fingers up at him before flying away.

No good me going shooting, I couldn't hit a barn door if I was sitting on the handle...

Hi Steve (and people),

I started with miniature firing models some 50 years ago...

Up to 1967 0.22 was free in Greece and I had a rifle and a pistol, At the time, ammo was really cheap, so I was shooting to my heart's delight. Have forgotten to tell that I never shot at anything living, only targets. Later on My love for firearms grew to a passion and I found (illegally) a Mauser rifle in excellent condition with only a few cartridges and an MP40. A nice Luger came my way as well as a beauty of a SW 0.38 revolver. Most of them my mother threw away and the rest were confiscated by the police (no, I didn't go to jail but just almost).

I am still making miniature firing models...

Being left handed and right eyed ( lets see what pratt going to say something stupid  %%) I found it hard to reload the 303. Putting the 5 bullets  into the clip was the easy part. The Bren was o.k. no problem loading the  bullets in it's magazine (30 I think) could flip it on and off using both hands with the butt  tucked into my shoulder. Kinda lost the interest in guns a long time ago for some reason or other.

I used to have an ex-RN 'frightfully pukka' boss who dwelt with his Mama in a large pile in the depths of nowhere. Straight-faced he described how the Old Lady (whose attitude to poachers would have made Genghis Khan wince) kept a loaded .410 next to the dining table. If bunnies came into the garden, she blasted them through the open french windows. How many bunnies she killed is not recorded but reportedly few of her flowers escaped shredding and the gardener learned to be exceedingly quick off the mark.

The thing that worries me about shooting is not the guns but the folk behind them.

Around here hunting is still widely practised. Every Thursday and Sunday in season I have to be most careful where I walk the dog and if the dog hears the guns she runs home as fast as her legs will carry her (and she is a "gun dog"!!!!).

I frequently encounter groups of men armed to the teeth but they seem rather less interested in the deer, wild boar etc. which they are allegedly hunting than the hip flasks and the bottles of wine which they produce from the rear of their 4 x 4's. Then they start shooting again!
