Help with foreign material (it is to me anyways)
« on: June 28, 2008, 11:06:45 am »

Having received my Steve Neil model of the USS Blueback (thanks Pete) the first thing that hits me…is it’s not fibreglass! I’ve been quite happy in the past chopping and drilling through one of John Darnell’s Type V111’s, and shovelling in tubs of P38 car body filler to get the thing looking reasonable after surgery, but this stuff is totally new to me.
I’ve never before worked with ABS/styrene ( whatever you call the stuff) not to this extent anyways, so I’m going to need some help here guys…here we go then.

(1)   What is the best adhesive to use to glue the hull sections together?
(2)   What is the best filler to use to fill in the gaps?
(3)   I take it that the hull sections will need some form of strengthening from inside when it all goes together, so is it OK to use offcuts from the mouldings glued along the joins from inside?
(4)   What’s the best adhesive to use for glueing in the internal bulkheads?
(5)   Would silicone sealant stick to this stuff?

Thanks in advance chaps…

Cheers,

Rich

I did some looking fro Mr. Neill's model and found it was made of FRP (?), new to me too. Looked about some more and found it is Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic. Still looking but found this web site on the stuff: http://www.plasticair.com/what_is_frp.htm  Hope this helps for a starter anyway.

Oh my gawd...that went straight over my head. Second time of reading it did make a little more sense though...I think I'll take my lefe in my hands and email the man himself, after all he built the thing, so he should know the answers. I hope...

Thanks for that oldiron, a good start.

Cheers,

Rich

By the way, where did you find all that info? I couldn't... :o

Let us know what you find out from him. I don't doubt the rest of us may run into to this if other manufacturers start using it.
As to where I found it. I put FRP in Google and that, among other things came up. Lucky shot I guess.

good luck

A lucky shot indeed sir, nicely done...I'll let you know what the man says when he says it.

As an aside, I have a jar of this stuff ( it falls off the shelf in the stores at work...honest, guv) and I'm wondering if it's going to be of any use for glueing the hull sections together?? Or will it dissolve the hull section material??
