Deco Geared, Thermo, 900, Car Motors

Advance apologies from a complete novice>

What do they mean? :D

I'm after a electric motor for my model Marie Felling Tug. (single screw)
(I understand that gearing lets the motor run at optimal performance, but lowers revs - hope that's right! - (but why not get a lower rev motor??))
The instructions recommended a geared decotherm motor.  (geared? are there different gear ratios?)
I have been advised to get (a) a 900 motor direct drive.
                                       (b) a ectotherm motor. (improvement on decotherm?)
                                       (c) a "car fan heater motor" :-\

Do I need a geared motor or just choose a lower reving one?
There are Soooo......  many to choose from! - I want the right 1!
Price is not an issue, but would a car fan operate better than the rest?

Propeller - I have been advised a 3 blade 65mm med pitch (via instructions) - although the "real" Marie Felling had a 4 blade propeller & I would like to keep as close as poss to it.

again apologies - I have spent the last 2 weeks reading up on the subject, but I guess theres nothing like actual experience, at least it would stop some of these "noob" questions!

regards

Marie Felling is a BIG model for a single screw. As a beginner I would advise you to stick to "named" equipment before you venture into scrapyard/golf caddy motors and other exotica. I reckon that either the Graupner Speed 720 Torque or the Speed 900 would do the job on straight drive, while the geared option would be a MFA/Como Torpedo 500 on a 6:1 ratio gearbox with 12 volt supply, or maybe their larger 800 with the belt-reduction drive. The Decaperm is a nice motor but they're nearly sixty quid a throw for a new one.

My own Model Slipway Envoy, which is about the same size as M/F, used a Torpedo 500 6:1 and went very nicely on the 70mm x 4bl prop.
On the other hand, if you want to use the model for tug-towing competitions then all bets are off!!

Try the Traders Directory elsewhere on this forum for suitable suppliers. all of whom actively sponsor the forum and will make sure you get the right equipment AND the correct advice.

Welcome aboard.

been there done that with car fan motors. quiet running but high current draw and not sure it would last too long. i set one up as a test and werent impressed.  also gearing a motor is in my limited experience a better option  than a lower revving one as gearing increases torque and usually decreases current draw whereas a lower revving motor wont necessarily

You will only need about 3000 rpm with a scale prop.
A deccaperm runs at 1750 rpm, but is expensive, there are lots of alternatives from direct drive of MFA 800 to smaller geared motors.
A 550 motor on a 3:1 reduction gearing running on 6 volts gives about the same performance, or as stated by FLJ a 550 on 6:1 on 12 volts.

I had a look at the Mobile Marine Model "T" motors, they looked quite good....

I have an MFA 6:1, as soon as I heard it running I removed it............ awful noise, went for direct drive.

I'm going to start a new thread - What Tug do you have and what fitted motor:

What Tug do you have and what motor setup?:

Thanks for the advice guys, FLJ, Hopeitfloats, Shipmate60, Martin and Funtimefrankie

I think I'll go for the 'named' equipment, like you say - I'll have a look on the traders forum for some stockists. O0

thanks

Gary,

When the kit was designed the only real motor of choice was the Hectoperm. But since then many suppliers have got new motor options that would be just as suitable, and reading the thread everyone has their own experience, knowledge on what would work best.

But, even though its expensive, I would put the Hectoperm in using the gearbox end, why? its known to work with your model, its reliable and rugged, has the power to manage your model which will be heavy.

If you want to be over the top Hectoperm GT500 which is the most powerful motor you can put in a boat this side of IC.  O0
