gas burner
« on: July 10, 2008, 08:03:11 pm »

Hi. I have scanned through a fair number of topics looking for some info on designing a gas burner for a boiler that I am building. I have been using the articles by Martin Ranson in MB, June 2005, Aug 2007 and July 2008. The burners look pretty straightforward, but no joy. I can't get a blue flame. I am looking for a burner for a horizontal boiler. The boiler is similar to MB June 2005 p 41. I have a couple of calor gas jets Nos 5 and 8. I don't want to use ceramic, because it wont fit the boiler. The Puffin Marine plant from Stuart Models appears to have the type of burner that I need; my boiler is a similar shape and size. Can anyone help with a design?

I have attached some images of the boiler, my burner which doesn't work and the twin oscillator engine, which does work - off compressed air.

Its now July 29 and I have managed to design a burner. Not quite what I intended, but it works. It is a straight pencil jet burner. This is what it looks like:

I now need to connect it to the boiler, and the boiler to the engine.

No 1 what gas are you using and   2 have you tried monitoring your gas pressure as it doesent look very high ?

I would suggest for a horizontal boiler that a flame directed at the water space would be more effective than the type you show.  The problem with your burner is that most of the heat is going straight up the flue without being transferred into the water.

I would try something along the lines of the one I have in my horizontal boiler as per the picture.

Hi

The boiler has an internal horizontal firetube, which turns through a right angle to the vertical smoke stack. There are a number of water tubes criss-crossing the firetube, so the direction of the flame should be okay.

No Proteus I have not monitored the gas pressure. The flame extends about 70 mm, and the boiler firetube is about 100 mm, so I could increase the pressure.

I need to put the whole lot together to see how it works. I will get back to this thread when everything is working - hopefullyjavascript:void(0);
Undecided.
