Model Boats Free plan - August 2008
« on: July 11, 2008, 07:24:58 pm »

Just a word of warning, I have started to build the boat Sea Hornet Minor, which is the free plan in August 2008 Model Boats and have found that the plan and end elevation dimensions do not always agree. Unfortunately, despite being caught out before, I didn't find out until I had cut wood. So I have spent much of this pm cutting a second lot of frames, very frustrating.  >>:-(

Hopefully, the next time I will check for concordance. Somehow I doubt it.  :embarrassed:

Cheers

I notice you say your a USA - X  BRIT. May I ask a favor. I am trying to find the correct and full name of a modelling boat magazine and I believe its from the states. Its name I am told is SCALE MODEL BOATS or SCALE MODELER BOATS.
Have you came across anything like this in the states mate?. All I need is the correct name and the publisher and I can get  a copy ordered to sus out. Thanks mate,
Lenny.

Thanks for the info dougal99, you have just saved me a lot of trouble as I was just about to start building.
Its a great little hull and something different from my normal craft.

Is it 'Ships in Scale'?...

http://www.seaways.com/

This is (currently) probably the best scale boat mag in the USA... most of the others seem to be aimed at the 'go fast' boys.

Free plans; Started last week and got this far up to today. Made some slight changes such as Mahogany sides for extra strength (plus I think it looks better), and the pencil lines came out okay but will need a few coats of varnish to stop smudges. Hopefully, will have it finished this weekend as have seats-windows-an old R/C to put in and some tarting up. Brass exhausts and flag holder I turned at work today.

One thing I have found is that with the engine cover etc, it is best to on some bits of wood going across to stop any distortion. You can see on one of the unpainted pics what I mean. I also made the same mistake as Dougal99.

It doesnt look that much smaller, the 'original' is 25 1/4" x 8" beam.

Looking good though Doug!..  O0

Took longer than I thought (Birth, Dad's 90th birthday and sadly a death got in the way) but she finally made the water today. Goes very well but I'll need a bigger battery and maybe a smaller prop.

Thanks for the compliment Toes

Look forward to seeing yours finished. I put a forward rake (slant) on the transom as I thought it added a certain panache  8)
