Any of you guys use cams in your models?
« on: July 15, 2008, 01:37:58 am »

Hi again

Just had another email from Maplins and init was a 2.4 reversing cam for a car, which has a view screen and cam. Would be maybe cool to use something like that in a model hmm

Dos anyone use anything like this in there models?

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=222320&doy=15m7

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=224282&doy=15m7

Or maybe even a cctv thing?

But would it maybe not be a good idear if usein a 2.4 controler?

I've been experimenting with 2.4ghz wireless cameras on my models for around 12 months now.  I use my camcorder which has a video/ audio in socket (not all have) and record the results then edit out the worst bits then transfer to dvd. Also use the camcorder as the monitor.

I've found that the proximity of a 2.4ghz transmitter may cause interference of varying degrees to the received video/audio signal as will people walking between the camera and receiver.

It certainly gives a new perspective on things. I've used the system on my tug which has a mixer on the props so I can pan around as another model passes. We run a club tug towing comp. and I've used the cameras (2) on the tow. One on the front of the model and one sitting on top of the bridge which gives 2 shots of the forward tug. I've even put a camera onto my electric hovercraft with good results.

I recently bought an all in one unit with pan and tilt camera controlled from a box containing a tv monitor. Works great until I switch on my 2.4ghz set and then lose all signal to the monitor.  :'( Back to the drawing board on that one I'm afraid).

Personally, I've found that the Swann products seem to work the best.

Well not exactly a live wireless camera but as an experiment I thought it would be good fun to do this type of thing. I used a small video recorder and put it on the fireboat and also another boat to get some side shots. It seemed to work!  :)

See:-

Fireboat, looks good that, i do the same kinda thing but record motorbike rides, i was kinda lookin at the live view though but it Faraday's Cage say its a pain witht he 2.4 tx/rx i guess its not something to jump at hmm

I was thinkin of maybe mountin the screen to the cotroler and the cam up in the wheel house but that would mean they are both near each other ( screen/controler) ( cam/reciver)

Any one else tried?

This looks like a useable bit of kit with a good range. And 9v makes it even more atractive. However I do not like the globe with the LEDs in it.
Is there another system without lighting?

And a question for anybody who has one of these.
Can the camera be pulled out of the pod, and if LEDs disconected will the voltage change?

Tiger,

Have you come across anything in the local electronic markets.  I've been considering getting one for the ironclads for some added fun.

Caswell offers a setup for subs http://www.caswellplating.com/models/camera.html but am sure I can find them on the cheap here.

Hi Chuck

Not seen. Probably need a security or radio/telecomms market. Or a trip to HK.

BTW any news on the other stuff? Not seen an email yet.

My Friend runs 2 cams in his model Severn class lifeboat. There are some clips on our site www.lifeboatmodels.co.uk look for the Severn videos. The system we have running is a 2.4 GHz A/V transmitter in the boat with the 2 cams connected in parallel and the power to the cams is switched from the Transmitter. On top of the RC Transmitter we have a 7" screen and the AV receiver mounted at the back. Both the screen and receiver are powered of a battery belt. Because of the extra weight the transmitter and screen are on shoulder straps not a neck strap. you can see this if you look at the Severn towing at the bottom of the Severn page.

I haven't got a specialised camera but these are a couple of clips I took at the Cheshire Steam fair last weekend as a bit of fun with a camera in a waterproof case. I have a few underwater shots I will be posting to.

CostCo do a cracker for £60....
Neat camera with colour output & remote colour screen, ideal for boats/tanks etc, I plan on attching the receiver to the tray on my Robbe f-14.
Maplins also did something similar to the 'FlyCamOne' chappy, comes with an SD card that records ages on one card and can be viwed there & then or transferred to the PC at home for editing....oh yes, it has sound too...around £60.

Your average under a hundred quid digital still camera usually has a video capability. Not the greatest quality but adequate for Youtube.  Got to download to computer of course. Loads of mine on www.youtube.com/MacSpringer
