Multi prop model
« on: August 22, 2008, 10:43:36 pm »

Guys
Can someone please let me know what I would need in the way of components i.e. ESC for a multi prop model (3). I would also like to incorporate the prop/rudder mixer as supplied by JJC on the port and starboard motors leaving the centre directly controlled through ESC.

Thanks

Give FLJ of Action fame a ring add is in Traders directory what you need from him is the now legendary p94 combined speed controllers and mixer which will do the job for you.If you go to the Elsmere port show this weekend check it out he has got my Eldergarth tug fitted out with one of these on his stand just ask for a demo.

hi ya there Mike

First may I ask a question?    Do you own/possess the JJC mixer unit?  If so, there are a couple of things that you maybe should consider - before opting to using this mixer.

The first one to think about is that JJC Company is now no longer in existence and having repairs done to their units is becoming increasingly difficult.   In fact, I am unsure whether there is anyone who has had any of the JJC units repairs successfully - of course I may be wrong there.

The second thing to consider is, I am unsure as to whether the JJC mixer is indeed compatible with any other manufacturers electrical components.   These are just a couple of things to think of a first; right....

so....I presume we are talking about your Whaleback build and power units; so therefore the power units will be either 700s or 800s motors.   These are large thirsty motors, when I say thirsty, I mean they draw heavy amperage.

Now there are severally commercially available speed controllers on the market today; which are capable of handling these motors - it depends upon your preference.   Now I know the above posting mentions ACTions twin speed controller and mixer combined; I very much doubt whether this is capable of handling the power requirements of the 800s or the 700s to be precise - however, they do produce a mixer on its own - which is compatible with about 95% of commercially available speed controllers.   This particular mixer does have the facility of taking 3 x speed controllers.  The 2 outer speed controllers which it controls are mixed with your rudder.   The centre speed control is not affected by the mixing of the 2 - it is only affected by the position of your throttle stick.  This is what you require:

It is a very straightforward and easy set up as long as you take your time, and, read the instructions.

I have used many of these mixers in my models, with a great success and no complaints.   Having said that though, I have used these mixers on an ACTion speed controllers, Electronize speed controllers, MAPLINS' -  'old' speed controllers which are unobtainable now and also home-made speed controllers.

I would suggest Electronize 30 amp speed controllers to be used; but, they are very expensive - talking about 120 pounds sterling for 3 maybe more.   The time has come the walrus said....for Wom and ACTion to produce a 30 amp speed controller HINT HINT....  O0

Hope this is of some help,

aye

In answer to your question it is realting to the 1:12 whaleback. I felt after reading your ,Master class that I would ask a few more questions sooner than I thought. I do not have the JJC units yet and judging from your comments I can bin the catalogue. I will go away and have a look at mixer and ESC's you mentioned as it sounds exactly what I had considered but using JJC units.

Just as a note the model I am planning to construct is of S32 and will be similar to the one Christian built and by chance who father owned the original S32 until it wassold to the BMPT and is currently in the midst of renovation.

Sometimes I feel I may have bitten of more than I can chew with my limited experience but you have provided me with a lot of valuable and reliable information and armed with this I am sure success will abound.

Once again thanks for the help John.

I have JJC mixed and there nought wrong with it, works with Futaba radio and Mtroniks ESC's. But I doubt you'll find a new one as they are not produced anymore. The best mixer I have seen is the home made one that sells regularly on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130248675154&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm38%26_nkw%3D130248675154%2B%2B%26_fvi%3D1
In addition you will need any 3 ESC's suitable for your 3 motors. I tend to prefer separate components to integrated units as it makes upgrading straight forward and easy to sort out should one part fail.

Have you used the mixer you mentioned? as there does not appear to be a lot of price difference between the Ebay one and the ACTion mixer.
