NEED HELP PLEASE
« on: September 02, 2008, 02:14:19 am »

Hi I'm new to the forums and new to the hobby. I have a Prince de Neufchatel 1:56 scale made by Constructo. I know pretty much nothing about wooden modeling so i need some serious guidance. The Model was sitting in my garage in a box and it seems that water or moisture of some sort penetrated the bottom of the box and left water stains on the two bourds that were in the bottom. They have cut outs of the hull, rudders and pretty much the whole bottom of the ship. Everything else was in a plastic insert above this area and is mint. My question is, are the bourds salvageable, will the water stains cause any trouble with building the model , also there were some signs of mold beginning but it brushed away easily with a small bench broom. I got the bourds sitting in front of a fan to completely dry them out (they felt slightly moist). This model isn't even available anymore and it was something like 300$ when it was purchased, so any guidance is highly appreciated.

If its ply and the 'outer faces are not detaching then they should be fine when they have dried out.. Check that the board hasnt warped though.

If its 'solid' wood, even better, there are no laminations to come off like ply would. Again, ensure that there is no warping.

If either board is warped, try drying them flat on a bench if possibe, and if necessary with weights holding down the boards so they dont warp any further

Thank you for your advice,  i checked the boards they are ply but are not separating, one does have some slight twist warping to it. Like if you held it with the edge facing you the bottomwould be slightly turned one way will the top in the opposite direction. They are dry now but i put them on my bench with weights to see if it helps anyway.

As far as the waterstains though would that cause any trouble with painting or wood stain?

Thanks again

Give the components a gentle rub down to smooth off any grain raised by the dampness, any remaining water marks shouldn't be a problem, so long as they're thoroughly dry and not too warped you'll be fine.

Might be an idea to trace out the outlines of the pieces before going any further, just so you have a record of them. Then you will be able to use them on a new piece of ply if it becomes necessary.

Just occasionally, ply that has been damp can delaminate away from the edges, but this might not become apparent until you start cutting into it.

I go along with Alan on tracing the patterns.  Plywood is not that expensive, but I've found with my working with it, that once it's bent it cannot ever return to new again..

Hope this helps

For tracing out the pattens, you could try photocopying it!

:) Thats a relief to know its salvageable. The weight idea worked out, i place the bourds under a 1x6 and put a weight ontop and they're pretty much straight now. The tracing idea is excellent to I had thought about making new cut outs on a fresh piece of ply if it was to far gone. I plan on selling this model since I have no clue what I would be doing if I attempted to build it. Even though after spending so much time starring at it, I can only imagine how impressive it would be built, but then I have no where to put it. Your guys enthusiasm does make me kind of want to get into the hobby, yet I got to many hobbies as it is. Between building/racing lawn mowers and tinkering with electronics its a miracle if I make it to work.

Thanks for all the great advice guys I really appreciate it.

Happy Sailing
