The part I love / hate the most about building a model is...???
« on: September 14, 2008, 07:38:47 pm »

What’s the part of building a new boat that you enjoy the most? And what’s the part of building a new boat that you dread doing?

Me, I love adding all the fiddly little detail bits like crew access/escape hatches, ladders, steps, scratch building a set of periscopes, radio masts and snorkels…all that sort of thing. The little bits that begin to breathe life into a boat.

The part I always dread is drilling holes and/or cutting slots. No matter how hard I try, no matter what I use to assist me, I just cannot drill a series of holes in a straight line without getting at least one out of line.

So…what’s yours then?

Love: Detailing the model. Reading old posts on my blog (philsworkbench.blogspot.com) where I write stuff up for when I forget the "fun and games" with some parts.

Hate: Painting. I'm so picky that I inevitably end up being frustraited at less than perfect results.

I agree with you, Bigford.  The construction itself, of the main structure.

Funny how there is always a way spotted to improve things, but it's NOT as it would have done.  The knowledge of hindsight, I suppose.   ;)

I hate painting. Love building - seeing a hull come together from wood is magical. And I like the close-in woodwork. But the finishing - it frightens me!

Think I must be a masochist or something - I seem to enjoy finding a hard project to build.

Love the building and fitting out

Really dislike cutting out windows.

Hate painting, but I will love it as soon as I learn how to do it properly  {-)

Hate: The detailed bits - all that fiddling about - especially with railings. And anything to do with soldering!

Love - main construction, especially wooden hulls. Also the painting, which is probably my favourite bit.

Hmmm... I seem to have exactly the opposite views to most other people on the thread. Once again an oddity!    :-\ :-\

Love:
The final wait to putting a new boat on the water for the first time.
Radio, Electronics, Electrics and mechanical stuff.
Having a "run" and getting loads done in a "session."
Motor alignment.

Hate:
Bad instructions.
Bits in kits that will never work.
Masking off.
Middle half of the kit where the end is not in sight.
Masts of ANY kind.
Motor alignment......  :(

love

running an illuminated model for the first time in the dark....the reflections and stuff !

scratchbuiding & making up and buying the detail bits- well most of 'em anyway

love sailing a new model for the first time

adding figures to my models, it brings them to life...

love a good robust model that is not a 'shelf queen' - one that gets sailed  and used, not goathering dust on a shelf

Hate

starting to paint a model and then finding out you dont have enough to finish the job ! ( my halfords tin is still half full of paint but with no pressure in the can !- so I split the tin and used the paint in my spray gun- messy job)

i also hate knocking bits off the models when they go in the car to shows and events... no matter how well boxed they are  or how well cased  they are it seems something will break... or a visitor to the show will have a go at the model  when on display !!!

my sub propshaft gland... as it has a occaisional leak and i can t find out where !

hate not having enough free time to finish the models i have started....

that the love and hate bits... but enjoy all kinds and all aspects of model making !

Love
Getting to the stage where you can see the finished thing. So it is effectivley finsished but just needs some work on supersturcure, and details.
The 'wow' factor from an uninformed audience, the first few times you take her out for a swim.

Hate
Waiting
Waiting for glue to dry on one small  thing, as it may have taken me two days to get around to building befroe stoping after 15 mins.
Getting all the basic bits together before I can start construction. You know the bits you must have before you can even start.

Hate finding new photographs of the boat with different details.
Someday I will actually finish a boat. :D

i really enjoy working with wood.  I love the construction part of the boat, building the hull and superstructure etc...  Ive never actually got round to doing the find detail for a boat yet but maybe that will rank high on my favourite things to do list.

Im away to start planking my fireboat tonight ;D
