Changing batteries / charger
« on: September 16, 2008, 05:02:42 am »

I am just going to a very basic double check - so I do not get any magic smoke!!

If my new little( 30" Atlantic tug)  RTR R/C boat has a 6 AA battery pack and I want to put in a good rechargeable SLA battery-- I would just buy a 6v battery off of ebay and choose something like a 4or 4.5AH rating..true?

and...........

is there any problem about using a Power Wheels quick charge for those rechargeable kids cars for 6v? I have a next neighbor with one and he says they are just the thing and will give it to me ... Soooo,..YES- he is right and there is no problems....or NO - he is a wacko and don't use that type of charge and I should move as well!!

Thanks

Go onto the Component Shop Web site and they will show you which chargers are suitable.
Also their prices are good and their service is exceptional. Order this morning and gioods will be delivered tomorrow 9 times out of 10.

Yes you can replace the AAs with a 6v SLA, but you will be down on voltage - 6 AAs are either 9volts for Alkaline or 7.2 volts for NiMh. If you are happy with the potential loss of speed, you may not need  4Ah, but if you can accommodate the size and weight go for it :)

As to the charger, what sort of batteries are in the car? If they are SLA you are OK. If car type 'wet' lead acid batteries, NO. If for NiMh or NiCd then NO again.

So Barrie- this is why I checked...if AA batteries are 1.5V and you have 6 - wired up.. isn't that 6V not 7.2?? ? I just don't want to smoke my receiver of ESC...Once again this is in the Atlantic Harbor Tug

6 Akaline non rechargeable batteries will give you 9 volts (6 x 1.5)

6 rechargeable batteries (Nicad or Nimh) wil give you 7.2 volts (6 x 1.2)

Thus if you replace your AA batteries with a 6v SLA you will experience a considerable drop in power, which may mean running your boat nearly flat out to get a resonable performance. However, if you put in a 4 to 4.5 Ah battery you will probably get a lot longer duration. Be sure your boat can support the weight, a 6v 4Ah SLA weighs considerably more than 6 AA batteries.

Alkaline AA are 1.5V.  6 of these are 9V
NiMh AA are 1.2V.  6 of these are 7.2V

Just beat me dougal. >>:-(
