Run Time Flower Class Corvette
« on: August 31, 2006, 05:07:57 pm »

Can anyone give me a rough idea on the run time I might expect from a Revell Flower class powered by a Deans Marine Kyte motor, 6 volt 1.4 ha nicad, Marine 5 speed controller and a 2channel RC.

Roughly in words of one syllable please.

I just want to know if I should take my wellies or cossie when I take it on its maiden voyage.

Simple answer....................put a bit of string on it if it don't last to long you can always pull it back .........don't get much simpler than that

with up to 5kg's of ballast including motors etc, you could increase the battery mAh and definetly get some extra sailing time, they can easily take a couple of MFA 6v 4Ah titans.

I use a similiar set-up & get aprox 90 min run time, which is about a days sailing for me, there is enough ballast to double the size of battery capacity if you wish.

The model sales excellantly even in rough weather.

Go for the battery as ballast option.
It will easily take a 6v 4Ah battery, and she need to be ballasted deep.

Richard, put your boat in the water, tether it and run the motor flat out. Stick an ammeter in the battery line and measure the current. Divide the battery capacity, eg 1.5Ahr, by the motor current you just measured and you should wind up with a figure which will be the number of hours the boat should theoretically run until the battery is flat. For example, if the battery is 1.5Ahr and the motor draws 0.5A then in theory, the runtime will be 3hrs. Thats the theory but it assumes your battery is up to the claim made on the label. If its getting old and tired (like me) then it won,t stay the pace! Naturally, the bigger the battery, the longer the run time and the same measuring techniques can be applied.

Hi Warspite - 5KG does not go into a Revell Snowberry.  Maximum weight is about 6 pounds.  I get a 12 volt 3AH battery in mine, with a few ounces of extra ballast to trim it level, and that runs for about three hours, or it would if the receiver battery didn't show signs of giving up first.

Here we go with this kilogram/pound thing again. Was wondering how I was going to get 10 lbs in it and still have it float.
Thought it was me for a while there, had to weigh myself to see how many kilowatts I weighed.
Thanks any way for your help.

what was it somebody said about English measurements being outdated on another thread, once again those dammed foreign sizes and weights have confused the issue could this be their way of conquering England by stealth  ::) ::)

Still not quite sure of the answer to my original question.
Perhaps I need a kick start!
Would have been easier if you had all come up with the same answer. Now I've got to start thinking again.

best thing to do when ballasting it, is take a plate layer on the model, if i recall its one down from the lower deck, giving a min freeboard of about 1" to 1.5", use than as a datum and ballast to suit, after all, who cares about kgs, as a model with a nicad battery is going to need more lead than one that is using a steam plant or a lead gel.

remember...
If it looks right, it probably IS right

Richard -

Sorry was trying to assist with the kilowatts...!  ;)

Just read your last post - if you want to be rid of the Kyte motor, let me know, I didn't buy one today as I was fitting the large model up with its running gear. Could always find a use for it if you don't want it. Cheers, Brian

Sorry, it should have read 3kg's (6lb give an ounze or three), long day, lots of work, and trying to have a stolen car removed from behind our houses by the police, (it appears the officer was getting cakes for the shift as he just had his rank confirmed, car had apparently been used in a bank raid that morning - funny old world)
