how to print
« on: October 18, 2008, 10:55:19 am »

hi all need a pit of advice.
I got hold of a pdf plan of ship i am thinking of making. when you view the drawing in adobe reader and print it out the ship is 13 cms long or 66.75% on the screen . I would like to get a copy printed at 1:100 scale 2.15m long . To do this i worked it out you need to scale it up by 1106.72 % Here were i get stuck. On a adobe you have 800% or 1200% to small and to big. Now from what i can make out this only increases the viewing size on the screen and not the size printed. some one i know has access to an A0 plotter so no problems there. What i want to know is how i go about getting the document ready so it can be printed at this bigger size.

Have you asked your friend with the plotter if he can enlarge on it? The print shop I use have often enlarged standard size plans to odd sizes for me.

I have Adobe reader 8 which allows you to type any percentage into the percentage view window. Have you tried that?

The problem is - that affects view but not print.

Oops! Sorry about that.

Try going to Properties in the print window and select 'reduce/Enlarge by paper size' and select A0. Thes select Multi page  - Poster printing.

Can't see if this works for A0 as I only have an A4 printer.

Cheers

Hi

Possibly not a complete answer to what cos918 wants but I've been looking at the various print range options and there's one called "current view"  I've not got a printer on-line where my laptop has landed ATM!  However looking at the preview suggests it does exactly that.   Setting view to the percent increased required and then using the scroll bars to show overlapping portions of that view on screen should do what's wanted I think.

hi ALL AND thank you for your input so far. I only have adobe 7 so i think il will have to fine a version on line of adobe 8. This will at leat fix thw view problem and hopefully the printing problem. One question an adobe 8 can you edit drawings as you can not do it on version 7.

If you are talking about adobe Reader

My Understanding is that the free versions do not have editing facilities . only the full upgrade does which you have to pay for..

I haven't checked, as I've no longer got Adobe 7, but AFAIK the print range option I mentioned existed on A7 as well.   You don't need to edit to use it, just set the zoom to the percentage of the original you need and then print using "current view" in a sutable number of chunks.

WRT upgrading, when I had A7, every time I opened it I got a splash screen offering to download the upgrade to A8

I think the currently available reader is 9. The reader is just that, no editing or saving out of bits AFAIK.

Just updated to Adobe 9. I haven't really used it yet but it won't be a all swinging version as it is a free bee.

I just try and get a A4 copy then off to the printers.

1/2 A4 to 18" x 12" in one go helps with on going details.

As a freebie alternative to Adobe Reader, there is Foxit Reader 2.3 which doesn't take up as much space and wakes up faster.  It has a zoom/magnifier which if used with the printer property's  "poster" facility should be capable of suitable resizing.
