1/40 scale figure
« on: October 23, 2008, 04:58:06 pm »

I have seen some pictures somewhere of a U-47 sub with various figures on board, anybody any ideas where these might of come from? Tried the usual like Preisser, Revell etc with no luck.  :((

Cheers

In the last couple of days there have been requests for items to fit very odd scales. The 1st was for a guy building at 1:16 scale and now one at 1:40. Makes me wonder if the 1:16 scale was meant to be 1/16" = 1 ft, which =1:96. 1:16 scale must be very difficult to do. Or maybe I read it wrong. BY.

There are a number of kits available in both of these scales, but I don't suppose they would have appeared on your radar............ %)

Wey up there chap have you, one's old bean, told anyone that you, one's old bean, aaare simply 1/16th scale one's self. Heavens above! How smashing!

Is it not true old bean that on one of the Ships you sailed on - the Captain had a wooden box so one could stand on it to see out of the bridge windows.

All in good fun old boy, I do hope so.

1/16 is common in military modelling at the moment. Especially for the tank modellers.
If have used 1/16 figures (modified) on my 1/15 boat.

But I will admit 1/40 is new to me.

I have 3 ships at 1:40 scale and I had to make my own figures by altering toy soldiers from Toys R Us.

Doubt if you will find any 1:40 scale as I have been looking for ages.

George Turner does a few MTB and tug crew in resin.

Thanks Dicky, sorry what i was referring to was if the figures you bought from toys r us came out at that height or did you have to shorten them slightly.

Cheers

Looks like a couple of people have a wire twisted here.
1:24 scale is 1/2" to a foot.
1:12 scale is 1" to a foot.
Therefore 1:18 scale is 3/4" to a foot, and 1:16 scale should be around 5/8" to a foot.
I realise that many people build at 1:96 scale which is 1/16" to a foot, but 1:16 scale is an entirely different thing.
It's really rather nice to see Bluebird having another go, especially when the basic premise was incorrect. If the original poster had said 1/16" to a foot (1:96) then fine, but he didn't. 1:16 scale was quoted. And so I said that this was an odd scale to build at. End of story. BY

I think maybe we are getting confused with metric and imperial measurements here

1/16 as i understand is 1cm = 16cm, 1 inch = 16 inch

Right.

A scale of 1/16 is a sixteenth full size, so 1 foot divided by 16 is 3/4 of an inch, so 3/4 of an inch to a foot.

1/16" = 1 foot, is a scale of 1/192, becausee there are 192 one sixteenths of an inch in one foot.

Quote
1:16 scale should be around 5/8" to a foot

5/8 of an inch to a foot is approximately 1/20 (actually 1/19.2)

Model Slipway Trent and Tamar lifeboats plus Range Safety launch are all 1/16 scale, while Vliestroom and Sentinel are 1/40. Slipway may be able to help you with 1/40 scale figures; I certainly had a couple of them on my original SCRATCH-BUILT  Sentinel...........

(Yes - surprisingly, every kit starts life as a scratch-build, Admiral. Some of us can do both.......... 8)).

1/16 scale is indeed 3/4" to the foot, while 1/40 is 1" to the metre (ANAFI).

There is much ado about "correct" scale for figures, but when I look up and down my street, I see that I am bigger than some of my neighbours while being smaller than others, yet we are all built to the same scale of 12" to the foot.  They will be marginally smaller stature without making the boat look like it has been hi-jacked by a school outing.  They might well need a bit of repainting/modifying, but we are modellers, not interior decorators, so that should not be a problem.
For 1:40, looking at the railway "O" gauge scale of 1:43 would be near enough.  Apart from anything else, they would fit spaces with a bit of spare clearance.

Yes, my learned friend. 2 minutes after posting I tealised my mistake! But the principle remains the same. Sorry fo the boo-boo, but Messrs Brown and Darling make similar ones that are far more far reaching. Otherwise, I hope you feel better now. BY.
