1/50 SCALE TUGS
« on: November 15, 2008, 06:11:52 am »

Does anyone Know if the 1/50 scale tugs are the same 1/50 scale as the diecast construction models ? I would like to find a tug or pusher boat to go with barge diorama that i want to build . The diorama includes a 1/50 scale transportation barge with a Liebherr Pile Driver . Thanks

I would venture an Affirmative... :-))

My tug is 1/48, and the ladder looks slightly larger than the ladder on the 1/50 crane house.

Umi,
On my 1:1 Scale ship we have  different size ladders in different places.

Okay they are different size ladders...

Does the scale of the 1/50 diecast crane look the same  or  near the same as the 1/48 scale tug?

I provided the picture so that people could see and formulate their own conclusion.  ok2

I have noticed that the scale difference is quite marked when compared side by side.

An example of this is that I often use the scale 1/48 for my boats. I purchased some figures at a scale of 1/50 and placed them on the boat, next to 1/48 figures. The results were quite obvious.

However, when the 1/50 figures were used in a different location, away from main features, it was not so apparent.

To return to the thread, I should imagine that placing a 1/48 scale boat in your diorama would look quite bulky and out of place.

Another point worth mentioning is, do you intend to cut the bottom part of hull off, so that she appears to sit in water. if so, then this would negate a lot of work in the boat building phase., as you would only need the deck section showing.

I suppose it all comes down to how precise you really want to be.

First things first Guys ,Thanks for the fast replies and even for the modeling tips. I am assuming that a 1/50 scale kit will work then. And also that was a great point about cutting the hull to fit the diorama. I definitely dont want to do that ! I have viewed aome of the great movies on youtube and now i am hooked. Can anyone reccomend a kit for a first time builder that is 1/50 scale to go with my diorama and that i can still take out to the lake and sail? Once again thanks everyone for your help!

On the Home Page Martin has a list of tug kits which include the scale, there are a few at 1/50.

Ghost in the Shell designed a diorama for his freighter that  would allow the boat to sit in a cradle at water line

See the third post down in this thread,... :-))
