Sourcing very fine brass rod
« on: December 11, 2008, 12:12:50 pm »

I have been following the building of the KIEV in Model Boats magazine and saw mention of 0.3 mm brass rod.
No shop I have contacted has been able supply me with less than 0.5mm which is to big for my needs
Probably everybody knows but could someone enlighten me as to where to obtain it.  Thanks

Hi Cap'n

Just a thought - maybe you can need to buy it as brass wire and then starighten it.

Does it need to be brass or metal at all?  I have been using plastic rod to replace the brass rod supplied with my Metcalf Graemsay and find it much easier to work with especially for hand rails and tight turns. It is also a lot lighter.

Try:

SHG Marine Models
Squires
Deans Marine
Hobbies in Dereham
Tony Green Steam Models

The thinnest we do is 0.80mm but it's not brass.

Hope this helps

You need brasswire.

Wires.co.uk do most sizes including 2mm and 3.15mm.

This would need straightening by holding on end in a vice and giving the other end a sharp jerk with some pliers.

Excellent company, I have used them on several occassions.  :-))

These guys probably won't stock anything at the diameters that you are looking for, but they are a very useful source of small quantities of non-ferrous metals.

Thank you very much for all your replies - but WALKTHEPLANK wins the prize
the list of brass rods and profiles on that
website is stunning and will help with my
next project namely the two large lattice masts on a battle class destroyer - I wasnt looking forward
to making them in evergreen strips.

Sorry for not replying earlier Dave,  but I wanted to peruse their website before I did.
I dont think they will be able to help me with the brass but I am very interested in some of their tools.
they look as though they be of some use to a modelmaker.  Thanks

Try brass picture hanging wire, its made up of loads of extremely fine brass wire twisted together like rope.

Thanks Dave

Just had a look at their catalogue
http://www.m-p.co.uk/viewcat.htm

Lots of tools and also bits and peices that could be used in modelling.
Possibly becuase they are aimed at the industry, and not hobbyists, they seem relatively cheap.

Worth a look
