Static Models to Work boats
« on: December 21, 2008, 02:34:34 am »

Hello Gents...
Can anyone tell me the what the basic steps would be to convert a static model as shown in the link,to a R/C working model.
http://www.motionmodels.com/ships/misc/wagb11.html
I do like scratch building, but the detail on the ship is really nice.
Thanks

What size is the model you want and do you know what the hull is made off?

If it's a solid wood hull it's going to be a lot of work.....
If it's some sort of plastic hull the hull will have to be cut open or the superstructure removed and a large
hole cut into the deck. Not impossible but you have to know what you're getting into first. as it's bespoke,
maybe they can leave it half constructed for you, ie. the deck or superstructure not fixed down.... worth asking!

hi tim. like martin said it depends on what that boat is made of. if ita soild wood hull then it a no no .
Is that type of ship you like ie ice breakers . As there have been several kit around that can be converted.
If you can get more info on your ship ref construction and size people on here can help better.

See your point...
Seems they are custom built, size on demand.
Sent an e mail asking for more details, both your comment are well taken, looking further into other sources for icebreakers.
Thanks for the input, I really don't want to cut up such a beauty.
Thank again,
Tim

If they are custom built then I'm sure you can have one with a hollow hull suitable for motorising. Mind you, as we discovered on another thread, expect to pay the price of a small car for the model !

Ask the guy's over on the rc group site, there are a few people in the North West that might be able to set you on the right course.

Just in case you've missed them, Loyalhanna list plans for Polar Sea and it seems that the official drawings are also available.

Packy, Lee Upshaw make a hull in 1/96th scale, It's big but if you want to r/c a boat it's not to big.
