smit rotterdam(again)
« on: September 26, 2006, 02:38:48 pm »

Hi there. Hope someone can help me with this. I have just ordered a billings smit rotterdam and was told by the shop owner that it would be ok for r/c. I have just been onto a website that states this model is for display only with no facility to sail it by r/c. Please can someone tell me that the shop owner was right. I am really looking forward to sailing this boat when it is completed and would be gutted if i could'nt. Thanks.

Chris

This is still listed as an R/c ( able ) kit,

The shop owner is sort of right.. :o

What you will have seen is this :

Almost all of the Billings Boat kits that could be  radio controllled..

DO NOT COME WITH ANY R/C instructions... thats a fact !

This has always been a major downfall of Billings, who never corrected the issue !

Their " get out " will be their statement about there are so many radio control systems available, it is up to the builder to  sort it out !

Anyways, no worries... You will have all the help you need, here on MAYHEM ! ;D

There are many models that are "static" that can be  converted to radio control.. ( and some that CANNOT !! )

Many Smits have gone before you...  so do not panic !

I had one years back, twin props, bow thruster, all worked fine.

How about Rainbow? I have just finished Nordkap and fitted r/c, but I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. It really is designed as a static model - there is barely enough access to get everything in.

Chris,
It can be made R/C.  There are a number of them sailing, and more than one building threads about them.  Selecting the 'right' motor, etc, is up to you though.  Finding those building threads and seeing what others have used is certainly not a bad idea.
