Hi ya there Taff

If you have a look in the scale boat section under 'Leeds Castle' you will see a photograph of a scratch built HMS Orkney in a little bit of rough weather.   I built this model a few years ago - she is plank on frame and built from the Jacobin Plans.  So, if I can help, fire away your questions.

Hi John E
Many thanks for your reply.
i am very impressed with your the Leeds build. She came into service whilst I was in Command of HMS Anglesey. 2 years of fun.
A very impressive photo of 'Orkney' they really were good seaboats in real life. I actually took Angelsey thru a force 9 off the Shetlands. I think 5 of them are now in service with the Bangladeshi Navy.
My build is a Sirmar GRP hull the superstructure I have built myself. I am having a little difficulty in making the strengtheners around the upper deck and I was wondering if there is a knack or is it just patience! with yours being of wood I presume that your strengtheners were of wood! Also did you have working stabilisers?
Yours aye!

Hello Captain Taff Sir, standing to attention my dear Sir, no pun intended? 8)

I have some information in a book on the build of a Sirmar Hull.? I will email to you this evening, hopefully I will have put my hands on the book by then.

When you say 'stiffening around the upper deck' are you speaking about 'underneath and around the bridge wings?'? can you enlighten me on that please?

These are lovely models to sail in all weathers, the only drawback the actual weight of them, that is when they are balasted in the water.

Yes, I did have working stabilisers.? Yes.

It was a mechanical setup to operate the stabilisers, with mechanical linkages to a swinging pendulum in the middle of the boat.? ?

For the Leeds Castle, which also has operating stabilisers, I changed this to an electronic drive, sensing the movement of the pendulum.? This is far more reliable, than the old mechanical one.

Hope this is of some help, I will come back later with some information for you.? ?Carry on with your build, this model is a lovely model to build and could possibly be a re-build for myself, along with many others? ;D

Hi Ya JT - JE here

Can you send me a personal message with your email address - I have tried this afternoon to send you a personal message but for some reason I couldnt!   If you send me the email I shall send you some documentation regarding the Sirmar build of the Orkney.

Hopefully there should be a photograph of HMS Orkney in some rough weather, just to give you some inspiration and bring back some memories.
