Hull Planking
« on: March 24, 2009, 01:32:23 pm »

I am building a Mantua Bruma and am getting toward the end of the inner planking job. This has been going OK but is not easy around the bow and stern. I know you have to learn by experience but am sure I am re-inventing the wheel here! Are there any good tutorials or advice on hull planking? The books that I have seen don't have good reviews generally.

I made that one a few years back. Only thing is, it was before I joined this forum and I am not sure if I took any pics during the build.
Saying that, I have got some of the finished build which may help you with the planking of the deck - it's curved decking.
Also, the brass etching for connecting the masts isn't the best so I made some new fittings. When I post these, I hope they will be of some use to you.
I do remember that I had to make sure that the final planking was curved to suit the first planking, but as it was painted, there is no detail as such of this.

Ian,

As promised, here are a few. Unfortunately it was as I said - no pics from the actual planking stage but if you want, I could always post some more like these if you think they might help.
The mast brass parts were turned on a lathe and the o/d dia is the same as the length - 8m/m. The bore was turned to the same diameter as the mast and this gives a much stronger connection then the brass sheet supplied.
It was a lovely boat-kit to build and I hope you enjoy completing it.

Ron.

Sorry about the flowerpot but the wife does - for some reason - feel the need to have other things then just boats in the lounge!

Thanks Bluebird
Ronkh - I've seen that boat somewhere on the web complete with vase! If you have planking pics and it is not too much trouble they would be useful.
Thanks

You could look at the section on building a model of a Thames sailing barge on my website. www.ivorbittle.co.uk.
