Confirm shopping list for a newbie.
« on: June 29, 2009, 03:06:08 pm »

Hi guys. I'm building a flower class from the revel kit and this is my first attempt at an RC boat.

Can people just confirm that what I've got in my shopping basket is what I actually need.

Hitec Zebra 3 Channel RC System Including 2 Servos 40Mhz - I have no idea at this stage how serious I'm going to get with RC boats, this could be a one off so I'm not looking at spending big money at this stage. I'm right in saying the Channels let you do different things? So if I had a two channel one I've got 1. forward/backward and 2. left/right and if I wanted to say add another function such as sound I'd need another channel?

Graupner Speed 400 7.2V - This seems about the right level for what I need? I've gone for 7.2V over 6 but what's the difference?

Mtroniks Viper Marine 20 - Not really sure what this does but I think I need one :P

7.2v 1900 Sports Battery Pack - Not sure what the 1900 number is but I matched the v's to the same as my motor.

I've got a M4 propeller, prop shaft and rudder already. The only other thing is I need a coupling for the motor to the shaft. Looking at Cornwall model boats they have a universal one. I can see I need a 2.3 plain for a 400 motor but what do I need for the prop shaft end?

Is that all I need to get up and running?

EDIT: Oh and this is going to sound really stupid. I bought a LH Prop, is this okay?

Thanks

Thanks Richard, I knew you were going to post that link.  {-)

I've used it to build up my list already but I need more answers. Like why did you chosoe 6v over 7.2v. Why Mtroniks Marine 5 over some of the others. Am I talking rubbish about the channels?

Hi Hencore,my battery is a 7.2V 3700 mAh race pack from  http://www.component-shop.co.uk/html/batteries.html

Mtronics speed controls I have used lots and had no trouble.

One channel for steering and one for forward and astern. If you want anything else to operate you will need more channels.

Graupner speed 400 should do the job though you might need a bigger amperage speed control.

You could of course have a word with Malcolm at Cornwall Model Boats who as a lot of the chaps on here will tell you is a very nice helpful man with a very efficient delivery service.

Hencore,
A 385 motor on a 35mm prop on 6 or 7.2 volts will slightly overpower her.
The 400 is a bit fast and can be power hungry for this model.

Thanks for the advice.

What about the Mtroniks Viper Marine 20? It appears that its only the amps that make the difference between the lower versions.

The higher capacity viper isn't a problem but you can use a lower rated one or an ACTion ESC with a separate battery for the receiver.
Remember to fuse the ESC, I didn't and had problems.

Hencore if you go for the Viper 20 get the plug and play one, no set up, dead easy, just plug it in and go.  :-))

The Kyte motor which Dicky uses is a 5-pole type which would be fine for this model on the 6v or 7.2v proposed. The Speed 400 is a 3-pole motor which is a high-speed device and not well suited to small displacement models e.g. I have one in a 20" Fairey Swordsman (fast, deep-Vee planing hull) which goes like greased weasel pooh on 7.2volts.
A 20A speed controller is well over the top.
I would personally fit a 360 or 385 motor running on 7.2v and an ACTion Condor 5A ESC - which, like all our speed controllers - is also "plug and play" BTW.
Suit yourself.

Hi FLJ

The Action stuff looks good but electronics scare me :P

On the data sheet for the Condor 5A it has a note sayings its not equipped with a BEC and that you cannot fit a 5cell rechargeable or 6V lead acid battery as the seperate receiver power supply. I have no idea what any of this means. I'm sure it would become quite clear if I had all the kit to play around with but I've got no experience in RC at all and have no idea how any of it really goes together.

Based on my shopping list above could i simply swap the marine 20 for your Condor 5A? or would I need to purchase some extra equipment.

I was also quite interested in adding a sound module but again I haven't a clue.

Have a read of this:
http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/BEC.pdf

Your radio can be powered by either a 4-cell rechargeable pack (typically included with the radio anyway) or from the main motor battery via a Battery Eliminator Circuit. The main difference between the MTroniks ESC and the Condor in that respect is that the BEC is built into the MTroniks unit but not the Condor.

The caveat about using a 5-cell pack or 6v lead-acid battery for receiver power is explained on the Homepage of the ACTion website - I won't bore you with it here.

Ref being scared of electronics, if you can wire a mains plug with reference to a coloured diagram then you can safely and successfully wire up one of our units. Even Dicky managed it......eventually  %) !!

You just need an additional  P19 BEC 1A BATTERY ELIMINATOR - £ 8.00
