Microballoons
« on: April 07, 2009, 04:40:54 pm »

Any body tell me what they are? I am told to give a final coat to my fibreglass hull with resin mixed with them. Why?

What will be the downsize if I don't use them?

Sorry to show my ignorance, but I am new to this fibreglassing lark!!

Little hollow spheres of filler added to Glass or Super glue mixes to "Bulk" them out. Easier to fair things in and then sand back.   O0

Hi
Rubbibg back the microballons will take a bit of time but if you can locate small quantities of it try awlgrip which is an epoxy filler used in the marine industry.it sands really well and leaves a good finish that takes paint well.......

Hope that's of some use to you.

Hellofotski.
Microballoons I have some still in my workshop, they are excellent for bulking up without the weight, only thing to watch; when you use them extra care is needed when you pour from the container, they are a bit like mercury, one slip and you are finding them for weeks.
