Council cashes in!
« on: April 30, 2009, 08:35:40 pm »

It seems the Torbay Council has cashed in on the recent credit crunch. There are a number of frieghters moored in the bay these days and rumour has it that the Council is charging extortionate moorage fees. And to ride out the economic recession foreign captains are willing to oblige.

The flipside is that the principle of Paignton Community College suggests a quarantine of students from her school on board one of the vessels so they can continue their marine biology studies and prevent the outbreak of the virus.

There were a bunch of laid up car carriers anchored in Sandown bay off the Isle of Wight on Tuesday.

I thought that bay was full of 'full' crude oil tankers waiting for the price of oil to rise? It seems they fill a tanker up, sail it and if the price of crude falls during the voyage, they anchor it up somewhere waiting for the price of oi to rise and they'll then sail it to it's destination.

The supply services in that area seeing a boom.

Can't remember where I saw that... was it in that 'My life before the mast' thread by Bryan?  %)

Sorry, TCC but I very much doubt your story that the tankers are waiting for the price of crude to change.

The way such commoddities are traded means that they are usually sold and a price fixed long before they are pumped out of the ground. It is the same with most minerals and agricultural produce.

Fine... I can't remember where I saw it buts there's a few of these anchorages around the world, one happens to be that Lulworth Cove.

Yes, it surprised me too.

[edit: you DID make me go search it out.

Not Lulworth coast per se but that's the practice... it's cheaper when the price of crude plummets, to have the vessels sit it out until it rises.. crew costs and all!

p.s I think I mean Lyme Bay?

Not always Roger. My son recently did a trip from the far east to USA with oil, only for the company to change it's mind two days before delivery. Back to the far east to another company they went. 60 days at sea!!

There was a report last week Roger, in the Times I think, which did indeed state that oil was being stored in tankers in the hope that market conditions will improve.

If this is the case why shouldn't councils make a few bob and keep the council tax down? :-))

It's a pity our council can't get a bit more cash this way. %)

The council will keep any extra monies for theirselves. Must pay for the pension pot!
When was the last time a council dropped the cost of the council (poll) tax?
Besides, who do you think will end up paying for the extra costs involved for keeping these ships of the coast?
They want to get the best prices for their cargo re; shareholders, etc.
Petrol prices will be hit at the pumps as per usual plus the byproducts go up so its you and us - the consumer - who pay for it.
