Look what I found!! (it's a picture of a lake..)
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:37:55 pm »

I am building my first model boat and have been trying to find somewhere to use it. There isn't any model boat clubs in West London that I can find and the next closest clubs I can find are either Lutton or the New Forest. A bit far for me for a days sailing...
Anyway, a friend of mine told me there was a pond in my local park called Gunnersbury Park so I decided to check it out. Turns out to be a lovely large pond with only a couple of ducks there! After a good look around they only sign I saw was a no swimming sign and after coming home and checking the inter-web I found out that the lake is called 'the old model boat pond' which sounds promising. I rang the council to ask if i could play with my boats in there and they didn't seem to know, even when I pointed out what it's name was and told them there was a black n white photo on the website with a child and an old yacht.

Anyway, here is the picture of the lake/pond. No one around and looks great for playing with models boats. All I need to do now is to find out how.. :((

go on sail there - and if anyone objects - then you will know  :-)) :-))

Make sure, if anything goes wrong with your model, you can safely recover your model without putting yourself & others in danger  :-)) :-))

Looks a good setting  :-))

just had a thought - have you ever been there on a Sunday morning, or a Thursday - 2 common days for model boat sailing.   You might go on Sunday and not be able to get stirred because of the model boaters  %% %% %% O0 {-)

I took the pictures on a Sunday late last month. Gunnersbury Park is huge, and the playing fields were packed with people doing stuff. The pond however was deserted. Maybe I am the only person in West London who like to play with model boats.. <:(

Oh, and they do lovely ice cream right by the pond!

Dunno about model boats, but I certainly have childhood memories of pedalloes on that lake.  The Round Pond was the place to take your Endevour or Bowman toy yacht.

I might pop down again Sunday but will be at the Merstham show which is on both Saturday and Sunday.
Thanks again for the link!!

A model yacht pond is exactly what it is. It was all the rage 100 years ago.
There must have been more model yacht ponds than suburban golf courses.

This web site http://www.modelboatlakes.co.nr/ is not accurate, I e-mailed them 18 months ago to let them know that you can not run any model boats, not matter what propulsion, in Epping forest as yet they have not changed their web site. I live 10 minutes from Connaught Waters which is on this web site and thought it would be a good place to run my boats. After checking with the City of London I was told that is not allowed under the byelaws. So check before using any water mentioned!!
