Can someone please advise as to the correct  procedure and requirements for the testing of steam boilers & gas tanks.
For example one club I know does not test gas tanks, some say the boiler must be tested every 2 years, others say since Jan 2006 boiler tests are done every 4 years but that a working pressure test must be carried out in the model every year ?. It seems some clubs go over the top, while others don't do enough ? what does seem to be interesting is we the modeller do not have a precise set of rules & regulations. I do hope someone out in modelworld can put me and a few clubs out of my confused state ?

hi,
Have a look at the thread - 'which steam plant?' in this section. I have outlined the requirements and desirables.

Any more q's let ask away, but bear in mind after tomorrow I will be away for a week.

More info on the new boiler regulations can be found on Paddleducks at http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2431

My sincere thanks to Sandy from ACS Engineering for the details he posted...

Hi,
As far as I know a copper boiler has to be hydrolically tested to 150% of working pressure every two years, also a steam test has to be carried out every year. A safety valve has to be within 3%(I Think of working pressure)
I have been looking for a boiler tester to test my puffin steam plant. The club I am with uses Walker Midgley Insurance and the underwrighters require two forms of water input  eg handpump and engine driven pump.
I also am a MPBA member and at the Blackpool show I was told that the MPBA insurance requires the hydrolic and steam test as above but the water feed is not required.
I am getting my boiler tested by a MPBA tester and will sail my steamboat on MPBA insurance only.
Steam boiler testing is a minefield at the moment
Good luck
