Hi Glen, if it's going in dive unit in the sub, there won't be much room for the speaker so it would have to be a very small one.. the sound quality will suffer as a result and you may not get the desired effect from it. I have often wondered if the Mylar type speakers woud work eternally in the wetted area, if so, you could fit a larger one. I think the coil would survive for quite a while as you would only want it to run when the boat was surfaced anyway,  but you would need to watch out for the permanent magnet rusting so maybe a treatment of Waxoyl would allow it to survive longer than expected.
Regards..... Chris

A small flat Piezo speaker from Maplin is water proof, weighs and displaces next to nothing and costs a couple of £'s at most.  Not hifi, but to simulate submarine pings and alarms, they are perfect.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0nw7312VJs at abot 25seconds in.

Hi Mankster, as a point of interest, where does one buy a 'ping' generator?
 Best regards....... Chris

Sonitron do a range of piezo ceramic speakers that cover a fairly wide audio range from around 500hz to about 12000hz, upon which they start to tail off rapidly. The frequency response is very flat over the audio range.

Don't expect heavy (any) bass from a piezo transducer- they just can't move the air like a more conventional cone loudspeaker with a voice coil.

Also bear in mind that they present a different load to an audio amplifier to a conventional voice coiled loudspeaker(capacitive rather than reactive), and tend to require larger voltage levels to give of their best. If you look on the Sonitron website you'll see they offer amplifier boards, although I have no idea of costs.

I have looked long and hard into this for the Yellow Submarine project. They're light, unaffected by water/moisture,and won't deform under pressure, they still need to be mounted onto a baffle though if you want to prevent rear wave cancellation at lower frequencies.

I've been in contact with UK distributors of Sonitron speakers and amplifiers, but there is a minimum order of 10 units, which is more than I require.

The cost for each item is £10, that is for a speaker, and another £10 for an amplifier to board to go with it.

Is there any interest in this from other modellers?

Please look at PDF at this link for more information-
