Steam Boat Sounds
« on: October 19, 2006, 01:56:56 pm »

I was just about to order JJC sound module from Malc, when I ran into a problem! My model says the original had a 'compound steam engine', but the available modules are either 'triple expansion' or 'twin cylinder' - which should I use?

Isn't a compound engine simply one where the steam is used more than once, i.e. a triple or even quadruple expansion? If I'm right you should be OK with the compound unit.

Compound Engine: has for example one low pressure- and one high pressure cylinder.
Expansion Engine: the steam injection stops before the cylinder has reached his highest point, the expanding steam pushes the cylinder further.

I hope thats correct...

Jan,

Thats correct, the steam is used twice - first through a high pressure cylinder and then a low pressure cylinder using the exhaust from the high pressure cylinder - the Midland Railway (later LMS) specifically utilised this technology - the most notable loco type (the 4-4-0 Midland Compound No. 1000) is preserved at the NRM at York.

Having read the Wikipedia link above, I think it safe to say that the triple expansion engine sound is the correct one?

Actually, it's my own personal favourite!

I dont think that there is such a big difference between a compound or expansion engine. The biggest difference is between directly into the atmosphere exhausting engines with its typical puff-puff (like the early Clyde-Puffers or most of the steam trains) and a engine with condenser with its shhh-shhh sound. But i am not a steam-engine pro....

Hi Barrie

Yes, thank you, we have received your order for the triple expansion steam engine sound.  We sold out at Blackpool and have one on back order with Jim Casey.  We will get it off to you as soon as it arrives.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond, mum has been in hospital all week and in need of some major surgery.  Had her operation today and is now in intensive care and on the mend, but we have been doing an 80 mile round trip visiting her in the evenings all week after work.
