New design of Smoke Machine
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:07:05 am »

I have been designing and making a new model of Smoke machine for MMB.

In conjunction with Mark, we have thought, "wouldn't it be nice to see the actual unit" instead of hiding it away in the boat.

To this end, I have made a fully working unit which simulates the open deck boats of yester year. This unit is the vertical boiler type and Mark is working on the horizontal boiler type, and hopes to produce them in partial Kit form. For example the working boiler will be supplied but it's up to the buyer to clad it in timber (supplied) and maybe fit excess pipes and guages to simulate a real working engine. The advantage is , of course, that you will not need a Boiler certifcate, and also it would keep your costs down.

I have made a You Tube film to show it in action and you will see it's all one unit, running from 24 volts DC. There is no need for a separate supply voltage for the fan as it's controlled from the main supply. I saw no need for a speed controller on the smoke, as 'a boiler on show' usually keep steaming.

I have shown a picture of a Springer with it placed on top and decided to make a complete new open top springer, containing this unit. Just need the skipper sitting in the stern. (now where have I seen that before ?)

It's a way to go before we can fabricate these, but if there enough interest, we could produce them.

If you have any enquiries then please talk to Mark on 01633 431010.

enjoy

Well done Ken (and Mark) excellent idea, I've just stopped building live steam engines
due to a thousand and one other problems and this unit would be ideal for those who
would like to build a river / puffer steam boat without the complexities and mechanics
of building a full engine.   It would also be an incentive to those who WOULD like to
approach the real thing I'm sure, keep it up....... bigH  :-))

Hi Daz

Reference 'that comment' I made in the film it's no wonder my brain went orf !!

You are correct, of course. The batteries are wired in series (not parrallel as I figured ....silly me, overcome with exitement). Never mind, 14 hours run time is enough to have without going bleary eyed.

How many do you want ?   :embarrassed:

Thanks to Brian and bigH for you kind comments. The first one is always the longest.  ok2

cheers

Very impressed Ken,can you give us some dimensions, I would like to fit one in a box 40mm wide.......any chances?

Don't need the decorative stuff.......just the mechanics to fit in a narrow plastic superstructure.

Thanks for you interest, Rex. The size at present is 15cm long x 6cm wide  and its 22cm tall

Please address all enqiries to Mark at MMB. We haven't started production yet, but this one will be on display at the Weymouth show on the 11th & 12th July.

Mark is working on the horizontal version so dimensions are not finalised yet.

The new Smoke Machines are up and running.

These have been fabricated by Mark and details will be on MMB shop under "Traders"

The prices are the same for both models and will be set at just £99.
