anyone have any info/pics on mv somersby from 1954 onwards. I know she was RFA ship (trhe first aircraft victualling stores at sea) Luton Model boat club have the test tank hull and would like to refurbish her but need good clear pics and anyn info that is available, there is very little on the net!. We know she was part of ther ropner line but not much else!!

Commissioned: 11 August 1957 as RFA Somersby.
Decommissioned: 7 May 1976
Renamed: 23 September 1958 as RFA Reliant.
Fate: Demolished on 23 August 1977.

Displacement: 13,737 tons full load
Length: 486 ft 10 in (148 m)
Beam: 61 ft 6 in (19 m)
Draught: 26 ft 3 in (8 m)
Propulsion: 1 x 6 cylinder Doxford diesel, 8250 bhp
1 x shaft
Speed: 17 knots
Complement: 110
Aircraft carried: Fitted with a large helicopter cargo landing deck but had no hangar facilities.

I spent 4 months in / on her in 1973. If you are rebuilding "Somersby" I would totally disregard all pics of her as RFA "Reliant". The changes to her original appearance totally changed her outline. I believe that she was originally built as a trading cadet training ship...for Ropners, as you say. In the days when some enlightened companies actually had cadet training ships. Perhaps this function was one of the reasons the RFA took it over, as she would have had more accomodation and "leisure" spaces than would be found on a bog-standard dry cargo ship. As with all ships she "had her day", but right up to the end she was maintained as a yacht. Well, maybe not that well, but you'll get my gist. ("Stromness" took over the "yacht" crown....as I mentioned in a much earlier posting). As an RFA she had a mixed crew. Ships ratings and POs were all Chinese. The "Stonnery" were (as usual) a mixture of Janners and Wee Frees. And "us lot" (the Orifices) were another eclectic mix, but in general hailing from somewhere in the UK.
I have a rather sketchy GA drawing of her as "Reliant", and a rather nice aerial shot of her as "Somersby"...which I'll post when I find it. Sometime this evening I guess. BY.

A couple of observations!
Dicky:...Got your Ports and Starboards mixed up again. Amateurs, but what can one expect!
           One of your other pics (the ship pitching a bit) shows the helo "pad" arranged for a Vertrep. The banked up cinema was directly below it.
Andygh...Complement 110. I would think that this was the complement of "Reliant" as an RFA rather than "Somersby".  Also, "a large helicopter deck"...Nope. A rather tiny one in fact that could just about accomodate a "Wasp". But these were early days, and things have moved on a bit since then.

We all make mistakes when we're getting on a bit as you will know Bryan. Seeing she is on the same side of the carriers in each photo and I put "starboard side of Victorious" when I should have put port, it was a bit of a daft mistake.

Ingrained sailoring perhaps? But each to his own. Now, if you were doing model "construction" work....the boot would be on the other foot, would it not. Just joking Dicky, keep going. BY.

hi ya my mate Dicky - dont take it to heart what Mr Young says to you - he possibly doesnt know the difference between a dovetail joint and a mortice and tenon joint with a split in it  :-) :-) nor the difference between Teak and Iroko  %% %% %% %%

or come to that a Tin of McKeowns and a Tin of Fosters or Castlemain XXXX
